  • Demographic Composition and Pathology of the Human Occupants and Sacrificial Victims at Ancient Korean Tombs

    Open Access•E J Woo, Yangseung Jeong et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025•References: 5

Archaeological evidence demonstrates that mortuary practices involving human sacrifice, known in Korea as sunjang , were conducted in ancient Korea. However, few studies have examined the biological attributes of individuals associated with this practice to explore the relationship between sacrificial victims and principal tomb occupants or to clarify their social roles within the contemporary society. This study examines human skeletal remains e…

  • Reconstructing the life histories of a noble couple from the Joseon period, Korea, based on skeletal evidence and historical records

    Open Access•E J Woo, Helen Cho et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•References: 1

This study is an osteobiography of a noble couple who were members of the “ruling elite” in the 18th‐century Joseon period, Korea. The archaeological context and historical records indicate that the couple lived and died during a period marked by strict observance of social hierarchy. The husband's skeleton exhibits clear evidence of craniosynostosis and spinal scoliosis. In particular, congenital craniosynostosis of the skull likely caused defor…

  • Trotter and Gleser’s (1958) equations outperform Trotter and Gleser’s (1952) equations in stature estimation of the US White males

    Open Access•Yangseung Jeong, Rebecca J Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Sciences Research•2023•References: 4

The performance of three stature estimation methods was compared quantitatively.Trotter and Gleser's (1952, 1958) and FORDISC White male equations were included.Overall, Trotter and Gleser's 1958 method outperformed the other methods. This study provides a practical guide for stature estimation equation selection

    Open Access•Heli Maijanen, Yangseung Jeong•ARTICLE•HOMO•2018

  • Analytical Review of the Forensic Anthropological Techniques for Stature Estimation in Korea

  • Generating equations to estimate body mass of Korean skeletal remains

Yangseung Jeong, Lee Meadows Jantz et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2017

This study aims to generate Korean specific standards for body mass estimation and compare their performance to previous techniques derived from non-Korean samples. Due to a lack of known reference samples in Korea, estimation equations were generated using the hybrid method on 106 Korean unknown skeletons. In the first phase of the hybrid method (morphometric method), a downward adjustment of 4.5 kg was necessary to compensate for a systematic o…

  • Caveats in Using Trotter and Gleser's (1958) Asian Equations for Stature Estimation

    Open Access•Yangseung Jeong, Lee Meadows Jantz•ARTICLE•Korean Journal of Physical…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Trotter and Gleser’s (1958) Asian equations have most frequently been used for stature estimation of Korean skeletal remains. However, limitations or caveats in using those equations have rarely been argued. This study reviews five issues frequently overlooked in applying the equations and interpreting the outcomes. First, Trotter and Gleser (1958) multiply the standard errors by 2 to obtain the 95% prediction interval (PI). However, there is dis…
