A Pilot Study in Odontochronology for the Pig Domestication Question in North-Central China
In this paper, we report results of the pilot study in which we apply skeletochronological analysis of teeth to a collection of modern Chinese wild boar (Sus scrofa)of known age and date of death. This is the first time that odontochronology has been applied to suids in China. This work allowed us to establish parameters for subsequent analysis of a limited number of Neolithic-agedSus(wild boar and possible early domesticated pig) samples from He…

had a significant impact on the creation, development, and direction of research in dental anthropology in the U.S. and internationally. We have selected a small, but international group of dental anthropologists whose research methods and interests reflect, and have been impacted by Dahlberg's influence. The unifying theme of this symposium, dental morphology and evolution, is broadly conceived to include papers on dental genetics, development, …
Identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA in a pre-Columbian Peruvian mummy.
The existence of tuberculosis in the pre-Columbian Americas is controversial because the morphology of the lesion is not specific, the organism is culturally nonviable in ancient tissues, and nonpathogenic soil mycobacteria can contaminate buried bodies. We report the recovery of DNA unique to Mycobacterium tuberculosis from a lung lesion of a spontaneously mummified, 1000-year-old adult female body in southern Peru. This provides the most specif…
