  • Mercury treatment in late medieval European leprosaria? New data from human dental calculus

Open Access•Elena Fiorin, Vincent Perrot et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2026•References: 53

  • Diet, mobility, and life histories during the early medieval period at San Vito al Tagliamento, Italy

Open Access•Giacomo Capuzzo, Elena Fiorin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2025•References: 10

This study investigates the life histories of three burials discovered in 2015, close to San Vito al Tagliamento, northeastern Italy. Despite the poor preservation of the skeletal remains and the paucity of contextual archaeological information, by using a multi-proxy approach including osteological analysis, radiocarbon dating, and isotopic analyses (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and strontium isotopes), it has been possible to reconstruct the palae…

  • Dental evidence of textile-related task activities in the Bronze Age site of Laderas del Castillo (Alicante, Spain)

Open Access•Alejandro Romero, Ricardo E Basso Rial et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Scanning microscopy identifies extra-masticatory anterior tooth wear at an Argaric site. • DNA-based methods determined a female sexual attribution. • Plant fibers found in dental calculus confirm a female textile craft specialization. The burial 7 from the Argaric site of Laderas del Castillo (Alicante, Spain), dating from the 2nd millennium BC, included a skeleton associated with a carinated vessel indicative of social recognition. Anthropologi…

  • Combining dental calculus with isotope analysis in the Alps: New evidence from the Roman and medieval cemeteries of Lamon, Italy

Open Access•Elena Fiorin, Joanna Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2023

  • Plant foods in the Late Palaeolithic of Southern Italy and Sicily: Integrating carpological and dental calculus evidence

    Open Access•Marialetizia Carra, A Zupancich et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2023

  • Ferns as healing plants in medieval Mallorca, Spain? Evidence from human dental calculus

    Open Access•Elena Fiorin, Llorenç Sáez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 47

Dental calculus, or calcified plaque, is a potential source of archaeological information relating to the lives of past societies. The recovery and identification of organic microremains entrapped within dental calculus provide new data regarding diet, health, and lifestyle. This paper presents, for the first time, microscopic evidence of the sporangium annulus of a fern within the dental calculus of an adult male from the medieval necropolis of …

  • The study of dental occlusion in ancient skeletal remains from Mallorca (Spain): A new approach based on dental clinical practice

    Open Access•Elena Fiorin, P Ibáñez-Gimeno et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2017

  • The population of Can Reiners. Demography and life conditions on Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain) during the Middle Ages

    Open Access•Elena Fiorin, P Ibáñez‐gimeno et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2017

  • Entheseal Changes and Functional Implications of the Humeral Medial Epicondyle

    Open Access•P Ibáñez‐gimeno, Ignasi Galtés et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013•Cited by: 10•References: 59

Longitudinal rotation of the forearm (pronosupination) is an essential component of human manipulative tasks. The efficiency of this movement is dependent not only on the rotatory muscles but also on several morphological and structural features of the upper limb. In a recent study, we observed that the size and orientation of the humeral medial epicondyle played an important role in forearm rotatory ability. We further observed that the forearm …
