Reconstructing the Tang Royal Diet in China
This study presents the first isotopic analysis from the skeletal remains of a Tang Dynasty Emperor, casting light on ninth‐century imperial dietary patterns in Chang'an. Compared with northern Chinese populations, the diet of Emperor Xizong diet featured fewer mixed C 3 /C 4 ‐based agricultural products and animal protein than earlier Imperial elites, such as Emperor Wu of Northern Zhou and the Crown Prince of Sui. Poor nutrition in Xizong's lat…
New Isotopic Data Reveal Dietary Changes Among Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau Biota During the Last Glacial Period
The challenging conditions for human and animal survival in the late Pleistocene due to climatic fluctuations during the Last Glacial Period have been of great interest, but more discoveries are needed to scientifically understand the changes in human/animal lifestyles during this period. In this study, we analysed new stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic data from 13 species of herbivores and omnivores (n = 37) skeletal remains found at the Laoya…
Pre-Qin and Qin-Han management of wheat agriculture on the southern Loess Plateau
Diet and Cultural Transition in Sixth Century ad China
Scientific archaeology has drawn new attention to the agricultural and pastoral interactions of medieval China and their impact upon Han and non‐Han groups. The aim of this research is to introduce a number of key new stable isotope data pointing to ancient diet, offering a new perspective on the “sinicization” debate in medieval China. While generational shifts between primarily pastoral and agricultural diets occurred prior to the sixth century…
