Jumpman: The Making and Meaning of Michael Jordan
How much temporal distance do historians need from Michael Jordan's career before writing about him? How much time is required before we can retrospectively understand his context and recognize the contours of his legacy? Jordan played in an era that included seemingly comprehensive contemporary chronicling of him and his Chicago Bulls of the 1980s and 1990s. Modern sport provided a means for widespread gambling; fantasy sport grew in the midst of legislation banning gambling; and DFS rode the coattails of a legal exemption for fantasy sport. DFS provided a bridge between fantasy sport and sports gambling, showing the untenable logic of laws…

The Playing of Games: Kierkegaard’s Influence on Two Elements of Suits’ Tricky Triad
Bernard Suits is well known for his metaphysical analyses of play, games and sport-what he calls the "Tricky Triad." Suits engaged in a published discussion with Klaus Meier regarding the triad and the relationship between the three phenomena. These two scholars disagreed on the relationship between game and sport, leaving other relationships without further analysis. In this article, I seek a deeper understanding of the relationship between play…

The Motherland, the Godfather, and the Birth of a Basketball Dynasty: American Efforts to Promote Basketball in Lithuania
The United States transported basketball to other nations around the world in many different ways and with varying degrees of success during the early decades of the twentieth century. In Lithuania, the efforts of Lithuanian Americans star Frank Lubin and other Americans in Lithuania proved wildly successful and wove basketball into the fabric of Lithuanian national identity.
