  • Urban Movements

    Open Access•Hans Pruijt•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2025

Urban movements are social movements through which citizens attempt to have some control over the built environment, the social fabric of the city, and the local political process. The topics covered in this entry include the social and economic issues that drive urban movements, the action repertoire, organizational patterns (among which are top‐down and bottom‐up mobilization patterns), and coalitions. Also discussed are the social composition,…

  • Autonomous and/or institutionalized social movements? Conceptual clarification and illustrative cases

    Open Access•Hans Pruijt, Conny Roggeband•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014•Cited by: 9•References: 31

Case studies of urban squatting in the United States and The Netherlands, and the fight against sexual violence in Spain and in The Netherlands, form the empirical basis of an analysis of the features and development of autonomous and institutionalized social movements, and the interaction between them. Autonomous and institutionalized social movements have different strengths that they derive from characteristics that are not compatible. Neverth…

  • Empowerment as Contested Terrain

    Open Access•Hans Pruijt, Mara Yerkes•ARTICLE•European Societies•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Sociological analysis has mainly portrayed empowerment as a manipulative, masking discourse. However, various actors in society view it as the opposite of domination and espouse it as a goal. Empowerment can constitute a discursive field shaped by its internal contractions between autonomy and control, between ambition and risk of programmed failure, exacerbated by the emphasis on responsibility, and between focus and stigmatization. The paper pr…

  • Culture Wars, Revanchism, Moral Panics and the Creative City. A Reconstruction of a Decline of Tolerant Public Policy

    Open Access•Hans Pruijt•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 11

Squatting became illegal in the Netherlands on 1 October 2010. The paper examines the dynamics involved. Theoretically drawing on debates about culture wars, revanchism, moral panics and the creative city, it is based on participant observation in squatter meetings, debates with politicians, a parliament hearing, lobbying meetings and various informal encounters, on a survey and on a collection of documents. A key mechanism that the paper explore…

  • The Logic of Urban Squatting

    Open Access•Hans Pruijt•ARTICLE•International Journal of Urban…•2013•Cited by: 42•References: 20

Existing frameworks tend to break down when applied to the analysis of urban squatting. Five basic configurations - combinations of features that fit together well and are therefore effective - are discussed in this article. Where squatting is concerned, the configurations differ with respect to the following: the characteristics of the people involved, the type of building, the framing, the demands made by activists, and mobilization and organiz…

Existing frameworks tend to break when applied to the analysis of urban squatting. Five basic configurations, combinations of features that fit together well and are therefore effective, are discussed in this paper. In the case of squatting, configurations differ with respect to the characteristics of the people involved, type of buildings, framing, demands made by activists, mobilization and organization patterns. Each configuration also entails…

  • Employability and job security, friends or foes? The paradoxical reception of employacurity in the Netherlands

    Hans Pruijt, Pascal Dérogée•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 12

The idea that investing in employability is the answer to creative destruction caused insecurity originated in the context of Silicon Valley. Paradoxically, this ‘employacurity’ discourse has taken root in the Netherlands, a country in which the employment system is firmly based on the norm of job security, the total opposite of Silicon Valley’s employment system. Although management gurus have built an attractive discourse on employability, an a…

  • Social Interaction With Computers

    Open Access•Hans Pruijt•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•2006•Cited by: 2

Social interaction with computers is a key part of the frontier of automation. Weizenbaum's ELIZA continues to be relevant as the focus of the debate shifts from artificial intelligence to the future of narrative and emotional design. A version of ELIZA was implemented in Excel-Visual Basic for Applications that combines adherence to the original specification with easy experimentation

  • Squatters in the creative city

    Open Access•Hans Pruijt•ARTICLE•International Journal of Urban…•2004•Cited by: 9•References: 1

A recent change in attitude of politicians and officials in Amsterdam towards artists who use squatted workspaces does not entail co-optation of squatters as providers of cultural services. The municipal Breeding Places Amsterdam (BPA) project is a continuation of the long-standing tendency to legalize squats, but now motivated in terms of the artists' function for the city. There are no indications that recent legalizations have an effect that i…

  • Is the institutionalization of urban movements inevitable? A comparison of the opportunities for sustained squatting in New York City and Amsterdam

    Open Access•Hans Pruijt•ARTICLE•International Journal of Urban…•2003•Cited by: 45•References: 11

In this article the opportunity structures of New York City and Amsterdam for organized squatting are compared. New York City knew two distinct squatting waves, with an intermission of several years. The literature on US urban movements predicts transformation through cooptation and repression. Only the first wave, in which housing activists used squatting as a tactic, fits this prediction. The second wave of squatting in New York City, and squat…

  • Social Capital and the Equalizing Potential of the Internet

    Open Access•Hans Pruijt•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•2002•Cited by: 7•References: 7

Internet communication tends to complement real-world interaction; it does not destroy (public good) social capital. The Internet can support and enhance communities that to some extent depend on face-to-face interaction. Taking the online communication of computer professionals as a model, this article seeks to demonstrate the power of virtual communities. Examples are the development of Linux and users’ reactions to a bug in the Pentium process…
