Territorial curation – Extracting value from the rent gap
This article builds on and expands existing work on rent gaps and territorial stigmatization, introducing the concept territorial curation to facilitate understanding of the unfolding and closing of rent gaps. Territorial curation occurs when public and private actors collaborate to overcome the barriers posed by territorial stigma to induce gentrification and extract land value. We argue that territorial curation is a form of stigma governance t…
Normalizing Urban Entrepreneurialism Through Sly De-Politicization: City Centre Development in Gothenburg and Stockholm
Among a number of proposals regarding 'late' forms of urban neoliberalism, it has recently been argued that urban entreprenurialism has become 'common sense' or even 'dull compulsion'. In this article, we contribute to this discussion by exploring the structural conditions and local strategies for normalizing city-centre-oriented urban entrepreneurialism in a Swedish context. In doing so, we return to an important but sometimes overlooked aspect …

Swedish cities now belong to the most segregated in Europe
This article presents our research on contemporary urban developments in major Swedish cities. First, we present an analysis of new forms of urban governance in major cities, particularly focusing on inner city developments. Second, we present research on the transformation of housing policies and the so-called Million Program. Third, we highlight new conflicts that have emerged as consequences of these developments, including urban collective ac…
Urban Uprisings: Challenging Neoliberal Urbanism in Europe
This book analyses the waves of protests, from spontaneous uprisings to well-organized forms of collective action, which have shaken European cities over the last decade. It shows how analysing these
Revisiting the urban frontier through the case of New Kvillebäcken, Gothenburg
It has been 20 years since Neil Smith published his classic The New Urban Frontier. In this paper we argue for the continuing relevance of his concepts by analysing the development of a new exclusive residential area (New Kvillebäcken) in the Gustaf Dalén area, a re-purposed industrial site on the edge of the central city of Gothenburg, Sweden. We show how the early millennial plans to create a new city district—Älvstaden (River City)—involved a …
Soft Policies of Exclusion: Entrepreneurial Strategies of Ambience and Control of Public Space in Gothenburg, Sweden
The purpose of this study is to investigate the thesis of the Americanization of homelessness in a Swedish context regarding public spaces and the deliberate exclusion of homeless people from them. It will show that the "sanitization" of public spaces for consumer-friendly purposes applies to Gothenburg just as in U.S. cities, but is achieved by different methods that need to be analyzed as an alternative performance of power. The concept of "sof…
Hem ljuva hem
Alla människor har inte egen bostad, inte ens i Sverige. Hur ser hemlösa kvinnors situation ut? Och varför bedöms kvinnors hemlöshet annorlunda än mäns
