Die Welt aus der Perspektive der Entwicklungssoziologie: Festschrift für Dieter Neubert
In line with the encyclopaedic scope of development sociology, this book offers perspectives on key issues relating to societal processes. These encompass the shaping of everyday life, intergenerational relations in diverse societies, fine-grained comparative analyses of trajectories of violence and the impact of urbanisation in conceptions of freedom. Furthermore, the book discusses issues relating to social structure with particular emphasis on…
Southeast Asian Transformations: Urban and Rural Developments in the 21st Century
Religionisation of Politics in Sri Lanka, Thailand and Myanmar
Until quite recently, religion was considered a negligible variable both in violent conflict and politics. At most, it was perceived as an ideological pretext hiding other, economic or political causes for conflict, in which religion was merely instrumentalised by the powerful. This view has changed decisively over the last two decades. In many political and conflict situations ‘Religion’ is now implicitly or explicitly considered as a self-expla…
Isomorphism and Decoupling: Processes of External and Internal Legitimation in Southeast Asia
Im A…
War's dark glamour: Ethics of research in war and conflict zones
The article addresses three questions concerning violent conflicts in Sri Lanka, Burma and southern Thailand: How is it possible to investigate questions of war and conflict in the field, especially concerning access and exit options? Access was gained in different ways in all three areas depending on the respective situations; special conditions and restrictions influenced the type and quality of data to be collected. The second question concern…
Patronage, Activists and Repression: A Comparison of Minority Conflicts in Northern and Southern Thailand
This paper compares the ethnic (indigenous) movements in northern Thailand with the violent conflict in the southernmost provinces of the country, and considers how these movements relate to both the state and the local population. The construction of the nation as an 'imagined community' is a project of the national political elites. Similarly, the construction of an ethnic identity emerges from the local elites. This implies that national integ…
Globalisation and Communal Identities in the Plural Society Of Malaysia
Successful modernisation and global integration in Malaysia have opened up new possibilities and increased agency. At the state level, success has allowed its political leadership to act as spokesperson for the post‐colonial world. Agency for Malaysians has increased as well, but with a specific twist. Not only has individual agency increased but ‐ even more so ‐ new forms of social control have been created. From the background of a plural socie…
Global and Local Spheres: The Diversity of Southeast Asian Urbanism
Urbanism in Southeast Asia is often depicted as a process involving the struggle of different actors attempting to consciously shape the city or make an impact through their daily activities. With the rapid expansion of business centres as a result of globalization, the value of land has increased rapidly. It becomes difficult to justify the use of prime land for cheap accommodation, and the eviction of squatters is now a common occurrence in all…
Globalization and Local Resistance: The Creation of Localities in Manila and Bangkok
Urban or Agrarian? The Modern Thai State
The paper repudiates the conventional rural model of Thai society for one focused on the capital, Bangkok, Although Thailand is obviously far more than Bangkok, an analysis of Thai society has to take into consideration the important role of the metropolis in the processes of economic, political, and social change. Contemporary political and economic power is extraordinarily concentrated there. However, this paramount role of the capital is not j…
Who has power in Bangkok: An approach towards the analysis of strategic group and class formation in an Asian primate city
