  • The Construction and Realisation of Geographic Brand Rent in New Zealand Wine

    Open Access•David Hayward, David J Hayward et al.•ARTICLE•Urbani izziv•2012

This paper examines the concept of geographic brand rent in production and marketing of New Zealand wine. It is argued that the region of origin for fine wine is not only a recognised feature of its value but that this may be conceived as a form of brand rent and furthermore that it is measurable. The analysis uses both cross-sectional and longitudinal approaches to consider grape and vineyard land prices, as well as interviews with industry info…

  • Regional dynamics in the globalising wine industry

    Open Access•David Hayward, David J Hayward et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•2008•Cited by: 16•References: 39

The rapid expansion of the New Zealand wine industry has rested largely on a specific wine commodity form, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Global demand for a specialised product has provided the impetus for substantial development at the regional level, an increasingly complex industry structure, and for the intrusion of international capital. This paper explores the contests and relations within the industry through attention to the commodity's va…

  • Horticultural Reform in the European Union and New Zealand

    David J Hayward, Richard B Le Heron•ARTICLE•Australian Geographer•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 16

The coincidental reregulations of horticultural industries in the European Union (EU) and New Zealand (NZ) are the context for this study of the development possibilities for the global fresh fruit and vegetable (FF&V) complex. Both regions developed specific post-war regulatory frameworks that have provided considerable periods of market and organisational stability. Presently, the FF&V industries in both the EU and NZ are experiencing regulator…

  • The Moral Commodity

Open Access•Kiri Le Heron, David Hayward et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2002•Cited by: 5•References: 16

This paper examines the Australasian breakfast cereal commodity chain and the processes of value creation in the industry. The paper has two points of entry to the commodity chain; first, a productionist perspective aimed at revealing how the material commodity is constituted, and, second, a consumptionist viewpoint, intended to show the construction of symbolic elements of the commodity. The value of the breakfast cereal commodity includes both …

Custom boat building in New Zealand is a globally competing industry comprising a densely interconnected community of small and medium‐sized enterprises. This article investigates innovation and interdependencies in the New Zealand boat‐building industry and explores the notion that it is an example of an innovative regional milieu. The study include…

  • Networking, Technology, and Governance

    Open Access•David J Hayward, Richard B Le Heron et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1998•Cited by: 8•References: 21

Cooperative business networking and technological learning have been treated as discrete features of successful regional economies. It is argued that both may be understood as governance solutions within the respective global commodity chains. Empirical evidence is examined of five export-oriented horticultural industries in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. Within these industries a number of instances of networking and technological learning are identi…

  • Growing discipline through total quality management in a New Zealand horticulture region

  • The International Flows of Industrial Exports from U.S. Regions

    Rodney A Erickson, David J Hayward•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1991•Cited by: 3•References: 11

It is widely recognized that increasing global economic integration plays a significant role in the industrial restructuring of many regional economies in the U.S. Yet the absence of information on trade flows between component regions of the U.S. and foreign destinations has hampered meaningful research on the impacts of international trade on specific regions. A matrix of export flows for the manufacturing sector is constructed by merging two C…
