  • On the Front Line in Someone Else’s War

Beryl Nicholson•ARTICLE•Region Regional Studies of Russia…•2015

Albania was not a belligerent in the First World War, but several armies fought, uninvited, on its territory. From 1916 until the final retreat in 1918 the river Vjosa formed the Front Line between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies. Drawing on contemporary documents, this article discusses the consequences for the inhabitants on the right bank, occupied by the Austro-Hungarians. There was only minor fighting on this front line, but it damag…

  • Women who shared a husband

    Beryl Nicholson•ARTICLE•The History of the Family•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 5

In Europe little attention has been paid to polygyny, though it occurred in the Balkans in the recent past. Data from an Austro-Hungarian census of two-thirds of Albania taken in 1918 give a rare opportunity to examine it. As elsewhere in the eastern Mediterranean, the extent of polygyny was modest, but it was more widespread in rural areas than in towns. This article looks at polygyny in Mallakastër, one area of southern Albania. While not speci…

  • Personal Histories and Social Restructuring

    Open Access•Beryl Nicholson•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•1996•References: 13

Using the capacity of linked census data to combine two levels, individual and aggregate, and two dimensions, longitudinal and cross-sectional, the process of structural change is explored to reveal aspects of change which are usually hidden. North Troms, in North Norway, which still had a peasant economy at the end of the Second World War is used as an example. The trajectories of those economically active in 1960 and 1970 are disentangled then …

  • Domestic Production and the Market

    Open Access•Beryl Nicholson•ARTICLE•Sociology•1995•Cited by: 1•References: 29

When domestic production enters the market it is assumed payment will be individuated and correspond to the division of labour. However, the sparse and often ambiguous evidence about payment for women's domestic production shows that payment is not necessarily made to the producer. Payees for farm butter supplied to a dairy in North Norway were in some cases the women who made the butter, and in others men, but there were no clear differences bet…

  • The hidden component in census-derived migration data

    Open Access•Beryl Nicholson•ARTICLE•Demography•1990•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Comparison of Norwegian “linked” decennial census data with statistics compiled from 10 years’ migration registrations showed that the amount of movement omitted by census data was considerable. This hidden movement was of a similar order at every administrative level, but only when total movement was considered. There was wide variation between regions, migration directions, and streams. In some cases census data misrepresented the direction of …

  • The Role of the Inner City in the Development of Manufacturing Industry

    Open Access•Beryl Nicholson, B M Nicholson et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•1981•Cited by: 6•References: 10

The first section of the paper surveys the evidence relating to the hypothesis that the inner city acts as a nursery for new manufacturing firms and shows that there is little direct confirmatory evidence. The second and third sections report on two research studies of new firm foundation in London. In the first study it is shown that few manufacturing firms have been set up in inner London in recent years, the majority being in the 'inner city i…

  • Return Migration to a Marginal Rural Area - an Example From North Norway

    Open Access•Beryl Nicholson•ARTICLE•Sociologia Ruralis•1975•Cited by: 2•References: 11

A small number of studies have examined aspects of return migration in an international context. Till now, work on internal return migration has largely consisted of parts of studies dealing primarily with some other aspect of migration. On the basis of population register data and migration notifications, this study examines return migration to a marginal area which is experiencing a net migration loss. It explores differences between emigrants …

  • Art. VIII.—Notes on the ancient City of Balabhipura

    Open Access•Beryl Nicholson, B A R Nicholson•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Asiatic…•1852

In travelling through the eastern part of the province of Kattiawar, and in that division of it called Goheilwar ( See Fig. A), after having traversed an extensive, perfectly level, and for the most part a desert plain, in a course from the north-west to the south-east, I found myself suddenly passing through a jungly tract of country, the vegetation of which, with the exception of gramina, was entirely composed of pílu bushes or trees, as they a…
