  • Ukrainian and Russian in the lexicon of Ukrainian Suržyk: Reduced variation and stabilisation in central Ukraine and on the Black Sea coast

    Open Access•Gerd Hentschel•ARTICLE•Russian Linguistics•2024

The subject of this study is the so-called “Surzhyk”, a mixed Ukrainian-Russian variety used by millions of people in Ukraine, sometimes alongside Ukrainian and, less commonly, alongside Russian. More specifically, the focus here is on the lexicon, addressing the following questions: (i) To what extent is the mixed speech lexicon influenced by Ukrainian or Russian? (ii) Does the distribution of Ukrainian or Russian lexemes reveal a reduction in v…

  • Języki regionalne: Zagrożenie czy umocnienie polskiej wspólnoty językowej

    Open Access•Gerd Hentschel•ARTICLE•Postscriptum Polonistyczne•2022

    Open Access•Gerd Hentschel•ARTICLE•Postscriptum Polonistyczne•2022

    Open Access•Gerd Hentschel, Olesya Palinska•ARTICLE•Russian Linguistics•2022

The study analyses the linguistic situation in the three Ukrainian oblasts on the Black Sea coast using survey data collected from 1,200 respondents before the Russian attack on Ukraine. At the end of the 18th century, this region was the core of a “new Russian” governate during Tsarist times. Previously, the region had been ruled by Tatars and there were neither Russian nor Ukrainian settlements. From the 19th century onwards, the Ukrainian and …

    Open Access•Gerd Hentschel, Sabine Anders-Marnowsky et al.•ARTICLE•Prace Filologiczne•2020

  • Language and religion in Central Ukraine

Jan Patrick Zeller, Oleksandr Taranenko et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2019•References: 8

This article investigates the relationship between linguistic preferences, religiousness and religious denomination in Central Ukraine. On the one hand, the Ukrainian linguistic situation is characterized by the co-existence of Ukrainian, Russian and substandard forms of Ukrainian Russian mixed speech, on the other hand, the Orthodoxy in Ukraine is split into different denominations. In Central Ukraine, most notably the conflict between the Kyїv …

  • How L2-learners’ brains react to code-switches: An ERP study with Russian learners of German

    Open Access•Esther Ruigendijk, Gerd Hentschel et al.•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 3

This Event Related Potentials (ERP) study investigates auditory processing of sentences with so-called code-switches in Russian learners of German. It has often been argued that switching between two languages results in extra processing cost, although it is not completely clear yet what exactly causes these costs. ERP presents a good method to (start to) answer this question, since different ERP effects provide insight in the underlying processe…

  • The linguistic and political orientation of young Belarusian adults between East and West or Russian and Belarusian

Gerd Hentschel, Mark Brüggemann et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2015•References: 2

This article deals with the situation of the Belarusian language in Belarus in competition with the Russian language and Belarusian-Russian mixed speech, both of which are widely used by the young generation in the country. Based on a nationwide survey with 1,000 respondents carried out in 2013, we show how young Belarusians see their first linguistic socialisation and how they evaluate the different linguistic codes in various contexts. The arti…

  • Mixed language usage in Belarus: The Sociostructural Background of Language Choice

    B Kittel, Diana Lindner et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This article reports findings from a survey on language usage in Belarus, which encompasses bilingual Belarusian and Russian. First, the distribution of language usage is discussed. Then the dependency of language usage on some sociocultural conditions is explored. Finally, the changes in language usage over three generations are discussed. We find that a mixed Belarusian–Russian form of speech is widely used in the cities studied and that it is …

  • Transparente partizipantenbezogene Adverbien im Polnischen und Russischen

Martin Renz, Gerd Hentschel•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Slawistik•2008

In the domain of adjectival adjuncts (i.e. outside the nominal phrase), Russian and Polish employ distinct coding-strategies to express the semantic orientation of adjuncts towards either the event or one of its participants. Event-orientation, characteristic for adverbials (in a narrow sense), is typically expressed by adverbs. Adjectives, on the other hand, are used to reflect participant-orientation, thus being prototypical instances of second…
