  • Results from the Violin study

Open Access•Meret Jäschke, Andrea Borho et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

The results show the need for additional action to reduce IVV against migrants, especially in the identified public institutions focusing on immigration offices, health care institutions and city councils/district offices. Training and supervision could be set up for the employees of these institutions as IVV has a negative impact on mental health

  • The association of perceived ethnic discrimination and institutional verbal violence with chronic stress in an immigrant sample

Open Access•Felicitas Hauck, Andrea Borho et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration and Health•2024•References: 12

Immigrants are exposed to a variety of stressors, such as ethnic discrimination, and therefore experience a higher risk of developing adverse health outcomes. However, the role of potentially protective psychological factors is not well-studied. The present study addresses the question how discrimination and institutional verbal violence (IVV) are associated with chronic stress in an immigrant sample. In addition, this study highlights moderating…

Julia Kieslinger, Raphael Dohardt et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American geography•2024•Cited by: 2

This article explores the meaning of the term “batey,” which can be broadly defined as a distinct type of settlement in the Dominican Republic, closely linked to sugar cane cultivation and transnational migration dynamics with Haiti. Drawing on historical documentation, we examine semantic changes in the term, from its pre-Columbian origins through the colonial period to the present. We also present contemporary emic perspectives on what constitu…

  • Inventing the savage

    Open Access•Erika Rosado-Valencia, Silke Jansen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal de la Société des…•2024•References: 22

In this article, we examine the discursive construction of the Sapara people of the Ecuadorian Amazon in the writings of travelers who explored the region in the second half of the 19th century. We focus mainly on the ways in which these writings reflect prevailing ideologies of the time, according to which 'civilized' human societies could be distinguished from 'savage' ones. In doing this, we analyze the representation of different aspects of t…

  • La tumba francesa à Cuba

    Open Access•Silke Jansen, Katrin Pfadenhauer•ARTICLE•Archipélies•2023

  • Language ideologies among Spanish-speaking migrants in Germany

    Open Access•Silke Jansen•ARTICLE•Estudios de Linguistica del Espanol•2023

When migrants move to a new country, they often encounter challenges in understanding and being understood. Narratives serve as a way for individuals to make sense of these experiences, reflecting on their own and other people’s actions, beliefs, attitudes, and intentions while weaving them into coherent stories. This study examines narratives of problematic language incidents among Latin American migrants living in Germany within a language ideo…
