The pedagogical challenges of teaching theology and mission to students from non-traditional diaspora churches in Britain
This paper reports the findings of a research project into Ministerial Theology Programmes (MTPs) at three Higher Education institutions in England. These degree-level courses provide practice-oriented theological education for students in positions of leadership in churches outside the mainstream historic denominations. Anecdotal evidence from MTP tutors is that the churches represented are overwhelmingly Charismatic-Pentecostal, and the student…
A literature survey of conceptions of the role of culture in foreign language education in China (1980–2014)
The nature of culture and its place in foreign-language teaching (FLT) have been explored at considerable length in Western scholarly literature. These topics have also received the attention of FLT scholars in China, which, with its vast educational system and increasing involvement on the international stage, has the potential to provide an instructive contribution to the debate. The Chinese literature is, however, largely unknown outside the M…

A Mixed Research Synthesis of Literature on Teaching Qualitative Research Methods
This article surveys the literature from 1999 to 2013 on teaching qualitative research methods. One hundred thirteen articles fitted the inclusion criteria; 79 of these were by academics in the United States and Canada. Only 39 of the 113 were based on empirical research: from these, seven descriptive themes were distilled, of which the dominant ones are experiential learning and practice-based materials and workshops. The literature portrayed te…

It employs a longitudinal ethnographic approach utilizing home indepth interview to collect data on the perception of the parents on biliteracy development and bilingualism and how they put into their home biliteracy and bilingualism practices; and the extent of the …
Language Ecology as Linguistic Theory
language ecology was proposed by Einar Haugen in 1972 as the study of the interaction of any given language and its environment. Despite some use of the term in the literature, sociolinguistics have failed to develop the potenstial that Haugen saw in an ecological approach. Recent developments in ecological thought, however; when applied to language, raise questions about many basic assumptions of conventional linguistics. For example, from an ec…

A framework for the evaluation of patient information leaflets
Background The provision of patient information leaflets (PILs) is an important part of health care. PILs require evaluation, but the frameworks that are used for evaluation are largely under‐informed by theory. Most evaluation to date has been based on indices of readability, yet several writers argue that readability is not enough. We propose a framework for evaluating PILs that reflect the central role of the patient perspective in communicati…
The state of the art of teaching research methods in the social sciences: Towards a Pedagogical Culture
No formal pedagogical culture for research methods in the social sciences seems to exist and, as part of the authors' endeavour to establish such a culture, this article reviews current literature about teaching research methods and identifies the gaps in the research. Articles in academic journals spanning a 10‐year period were collected by searching academic catalogues and compiling a database of 195 articles published in 61 journals. These art…
Students’ Conceptions—and Misconceptions—of Social Research
How knowledge of students’ conceptions of social research can influence the pedagogy of research methods is the focus of this article. This study explains how students’ conceptions of social research changed over the course of a two-semester research programme. Twenty-nine graduate students participated in focus groups, interviews, and open-ended surveys to inform the instructor’s pedagogical decisions in developing the course. Data were analyzed…
The Language of the Betungkal Ceremony: An Ecological Approach
The discourse of ritual may be one of the clearest and most fundamental mani- festations of language in its ecological setting. It simultaneously manifests and re- creates the three dynamic systems of sociality—communication, culture, and com- munity. In this paper we examine the language in betungkal, a traditional anoint- ing ceremony of West Kalimantan. The language is characterized by complex pat- terning, showing by both constant repetition …
Operational Communication: A paradigm for applied research into police call-handling
Call-handlers’ work is pivotal in the day-to-day functioning of the police. They have to interpret the call and assess it in the light of procedures and current demands on resources. They thus set the agenda and act as gate-keepers to police assistance, help to shape relationships with the public and indirectly influence policy through their patterns of call classification. Despite this, there has been limited linguistic interest in call-handling…
Sociolinguistic Minorities, Research, and Social Relationships
This paper suggests elements of an agenda for future sociolinguistics among minority groups, by seeing it as a mutual relationship that involves benefits to researcher and researched. We focus on two aspects of the relationship. One is the political, economic and social benefits that can accrue to a minority group as a result of the research. Research planned and conducted along with the minority group can result in knowledge and other outcomes t…
