Mock juror decision-making and the intersectionality of race and gender in a case of intimate partner violence
In the United States, female racial and ethnic minorities experience intimate partner violence at disproportionally higher rates than their White counterparts and are more likely to be involved with the criminal legal system. However, to date, most research examining intimate partner violence and juror decision-making has failed to consider the intersectionality of race and gender. The current study applied an intersectional approach in the exami…

Revisiting authenticity in the Breton lexicon: An Empirical Approach
This paper examines the perceived authenticity of the varieties of Breton spoken by both traditional native speakers and "new speakers," who acquire the language through courses and immersion schools. Specifically, it takes the case of lexical items; while French borrowings used in Breton are considered "impurities" by some Breton speakers, the neologisms coined to replace them using Celtic morphemes have been criticized for their inauthenticity.…
Court-reported competence to proceed data across the United States
OBJECTIVE: Competence to proceed (CTP) is a constitutional protection intended to facilitate fairness and dignity of court proceedings. Researchers have estimated that between 60,000 and 94,000 defendants are evaluated for CTP each year. Yet no research has systematically identified the number of evaluations conducted each year, despite their critical role and many profound implications. We used large-scale, systematic data collection to address …
Advancing Equitable and Responsible Research Involving Gender and Sexuality within Mathematics Education
Mathematics education research has been slow to adopt inclusive practices concerning Queer students. In this study, two doctoral dissertations highlight responsible research approaches to advance inclusivity. Ambiguous use of the terms “sex” and “gender” and using only binary statistical methods can lead to erroneous assumptions about factors that might be biological, psychological, or social. Queer-related discussions in classrooms and research,…

The Mediating Role of Perceived Parental Competence in the Relationship Between Parental Psychopathic Traits and Parenting Behaviors
The importance of parenting in shaping child development has been widely supported, with many researchers considering parenting to be one of the factors most predictive of child outcomes. Despite the importance of parenting behaviors, not enough is known about their antecedents. In this study, we examine the extent to which psychopathic personality traits relate to parenting behaviors by determining which aspects of parental competence mediate th…

Temporal tensions in young adults’ efforts towards influencing institutional climate action
In this Viewpoint we draw attention to an overlooked tension at the intersection of young adults’ and older adults’ everyday life-world temporalities, and argue that this tension presents a considerable intergenerational challenge for the enabling of young people’s agency for climate action. We articulate the often-cyclical nature of young people’s everyday temporalities, especially for those within formal education systems based on year-on-year …

Discretionary Prosecutorial Decision-Making: Gender, Sexual Orientation, and Bias in Intimate Partner Violence
Prosecutors exercise substantial discretion within the criminal justice process, potentially allowing for discrepant treatment of criminal cases. The purpose of this research was to examine the association between prosecutorial implicit biases and victim gender and sexual orientation in an intimate partner violence (IPV) case. Participants, 201 prosecutors from across the United States, completed two Implicit Association Tests to measure implicit…
The Personality Assessment Inventory in U.S. Case Law: A Survey and Examination of Relevance to Legal Proceedings

Perceptions of Mental Health Conditions in Criminal Cases: A Survey Study Involving Swedish Lay Judges
Perceptions of mental health conditions influence how individuals with psychiatric diagnoses are treated within the community, in the legal system, and at different institutions. We examined perceptions of mental health conditions among lay judges ( N = 643), working at district and appellate courts throughout Sweden. Participants read a web-based survey including a crime vignette in which the person charged with a crime was described as having s…
Aberration of mind or soul: The role of media in perceptions of mass violence
Purpose Unconscious biases against certain groups aid in forming assumptions which may be promulgated in the USA via popular news media linking rare but memorable violent acts with specific groups. However, the relationship between marginalized group association, assumptions regarding the motive for violent acts and individual media consumption has never been directly examined. This study aims to directly examine this relationship. Design/methodo…

Adding Insult to Injury: Sex, Sexual Orientation, and Juror Decision-Making in a Case of Intimate Partner Violence
Societal definitions of intimate partner violence (IPV) are highly gendered and heteronormative, resulting in dissonance regarding cases of same-sex IPV. This study explored perceptions of IPV when the context of the case is inconsistent with societal norms regarding sex and sexuality. Mock jurors read a vignette describing a case of alleged IPV in which the sex and sexual orientation of the defendant were manipulated. Participants (N = 415) rend…
Entering Life Maimed: The Compatibility of Disability and Life
Jesus declared in Matt 18:8-9 that a person can “enter life maimed.” To appreciate the radical nature of Jesus' words, the Deuteronomic theology of “life” is contrasted to the theology of “life” in Matthew's Gospel. In Deuteronomy, “life” is associated with existence in the land and physical wholeness. In contrast to Deuteronomy, “life” in Matthew is not associated with either the land or physical wholeness, but rather found by following Jesus. T…

Mitigation of the heat island effect in urban New Jersey
Implementation of urban heat island (UHI) mitigation strategies such as increased vegetative cover and higher-albedo surface materials can reduce the impacts of biophysical hazards in cities, including heat stress related to elevated temperatures, air pollution and associated public health effects. Such strategies also can lower the demand for air-conditioning-related energy production. Since local impacts of global climate change may be intensif…

Performing memory/speech: Aesthetic boundaries and “the other” in Ghetto and the normal heart
Tudy Yordon's and Robert Bradley's extraordinary accounts of their producJ tions of Ghetto and The Normal Heart invite us to consider a number of intriguing questions about its audiences, and praxis. And, for me, these are inevitably rhetorical questions. How, for example, do performances such as these create spaces for social or political speech? In what manner do they re-position their audiences within these spaces? And, how might these capacit…

Beyond Frames: Recovering the Strategic in Climate Communication
Recent calls for communication scholars and practitioners to identify effective communication means for mobilizing constituencies to address climate change often fall to distinguish between communicative acts that “mobilize” and mobilization that enables a particular end. The latter presupposes an account of the intentional or strategic alignment of mobilization, that is, the predicted or assumed relationships among a mobilized public, the mode(s…
