Evaluating a Decision-Making Architecture in Human-Robot Collaboration Experiments
A novel decision-making architecture inspired by the role of mirror neurons is evaluated in two user studies. First, the role and efficacy of the negotiation layer of the architecture is assessed. Then, in a “Wizard of Oz” experiment, the performance of the complete architecture is compared with the one of a human decision-maker. The same task of using wooden blocks to create characters in a kind of mechanical model of a 7-segment display is used…
A Novel Mirror Neuron Inspired Decision-Making Architecture for Human–Robot Interaction
Inspired by the role of mirror neurons and the importance of predictions in joint action, a novel decision-making structure is proposed, designed and tested for both individual and dyadic action. The structure comprises models representing individual decision policies, policy integration layer(s), and a negotiation layer. The latter is introduced to prevent and resolve conflicts among individuals through internal simulation rather than via explic…
Challenging Uncomfortableness
This article discusses the adaptive reuse of buildings associated with uncomfortable memories that have been turned into places for the general public to enjoy. It can be argued that the transformation of Australian heritage gaols into museums makes economic, cultural, and social sense, given the increasing rate of interest in dark tourism and the willingness of contemporary Australians and international tourists to understand the continent’s car…
Evaluation of public–private partnerships
Public–private partnerships have become an integral strategy to deliver infrastructure projects in Australia. Yet, public–private partnerships have been plagued with controversy due to recurrent time and cost overruns. The paucity of an approach to evaluate the performance of public–private partnerships throughout their life-cycle has hindered the ability of governments to manage their effective and efficient delivery. This paper examines the pra…

Cigarette fires and burns in a population of New Zealand smokers
The results indicate that cigarette-caused fires and burns are common among New Zealand smokers, are a source of inequality and therefore deserve greater attention from health advocates and policymakers
Human skeletal and mummified remains from the AD1854 siege of Mugombane, Limpopo South Africa
The Road to a World Heritage Monument for Surveyors
In July 2005 UNESCO voted to have the Struve Geodetic Arc inscribed on its List of World Heritage Monuments. Not only is this a first for the Surveying profession, but also for UNESCO in the sense of the type of monument it lists. This paper will outline the background to Arc measurement, give some details of the Struve Arc and its possible extension into Africa and indicate why it is not for the faint hearted to get involved in putting a monumen…

Budgeting for the Millenium
The year 2000 is almost upon us. Figuring out the implications of the millennium for budgeters is an urgent task: This editorial lays out some likely scenarios. To budgeters used to thinking in terms of annual and biennial budgets, a millennial budget is a new concept. Millennial budgeting for some budgeters, especially in CBO, OMB, and GAO, means budgeting for the next 1000 years. They are already projecting thirty years out. What is another 970…
