Keeping up with the Korean Yeojas
Over the past decade, there has been a noticeable increase in the engagement of Korean women ('yeoja' in Korean translation) in physical activities. Despite discussions emphasizing active exercise and fitness, motivations for women's participation have often been centered around weight management and dieting. This study explores the experiences of Korean women participating in aesthetic exercise – physical activities such as yoga, Pilates, and po…
"Exploring the "perfect physique
In 2023, a Korean reality show, Physical 100, captured international audiences and became the most-watched non-English-language show on Netflix. It features a hundred contestants competing in a series of physically demanding obstacles to claim the prize and honor of having the "perfect physique". This study aims to understand how the "perfect physique" is conceptualized through the show's framing and the (re)production of mind-body discourse disc…
Keeping it lowkey
Recently, there has been a significant increase in female audiences and fans at professional sport events in South Korea (hereafter Korea), particularly women's volleyball. This growth in higher viewer ratings and stadium attendance is attributed to elements such as athletes' sportsmanship and their dynamic athletic performances. However, there is little known about the Korean women's volleyball league's fanbase. Previous studies have focused on …
Changes in Inflation Dynamics in Korea
This study examines the influence of global and country factors on inflation movements in Korea using a multi‐level factor model. Our results indicate that country factors showed a more pronounced alignment with inflation in Korea up to the mid‐2000s, having particularly strong impacts around the Asian financial crisis. Beyond the mid‐2000s, global factors played a more influential role in shaping inflation. This increased influence of global fac…
What Are Sporty Sisters Talking About? A Textual Analysis of an All-Female Athlete Reality Show
This study explores the representation of female athletes cast in a South Korean reality show titled Sporty Sisters (Korean title: Nonun Unni). Though there have been attempts to understand the media representation of female athletes from diverse media landscapes, the analysis of Asian female athletes is limited. Such interpretations have been discussed through geopolitical relations or nationalistic representations, which lack in-depth understan…

Stem similarity modulates infants' acquisition of phonological alternations
Before I am biologically a male, I am me
The field of sports has traditionally been a domain that practices and reinforces masculinity. However, in contemporary literature, observations and experiences of males in sports have expanded their ideas on masculinity as well as gender identity. Furthermore, there is an increase in males participating in non-orthodox masculine physical activities, most of which are known as 'gender appropriate' for females such as cheerleading, dance, gymnasti…
Why do women value credentials? Perceptions of gender inequality and credentialism in South Korea
I'm a Poler, and Proud of It
The primary purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of South Korean women "doing serious leisure" in what is widely known as a stigmatized activity, pole dance. It seeks to understand the experiences of South Korean women participating in pole dance and to investigate the strategies that are used to cope with the stigma that is experienced during participation. A qualitative research method was applied with an "insider" approach to co…
Segmentation of vowel-initial words is facilitated by function words
Within the first year of life, infants learn to segment words from fluent speech. Previous research has shown that infants at 0;7·5 can segment consonant-initial words, yet the ability to segment vowel-initial words does not emerge until the age of 1;1–1;4 (0;11 in some restricted cases). In five experiments, we show that infants aged 0;11 but not 0;8 are able to segment vowel-initial words that immediately follow the function word the [ði], whil…
How Reliable Are Local Projection Estimators of Impulse Responses
We compare the finite-sample performance of impulse response confidence intervals based on local projections (LPs) and vector autoregressive (VAR) models in linear stationary settings. We find that in small samples, the asymptotic LP interval often is less accurate than the bias-adjusted bootstrap VAR interval, notwithstanding its excessive average length. Although the asymptotic LP interval has adequate coverage in sufficiently large samples, it…
