  • The Status of Modern Greek and Hellenic Studies in Canada and the York University Experience

    Thomas W Gallant•ARTICLE•Journal of modern Greek studies•2006

The development of programs devoted to Modern Greek and Hellenic Studies is a more recent phenomenon in Canada than in the United States. In addition to being younger, the programs in Canada are located in social, political and institutional situations that present them with some opportunities and challenges that differ from those facing US programs. They also confront some of the same dilemmas as colleagues elsewhere as these are common to acade…

The bailiffs employed by the local landlords and the constables ordered to protect them were to arrive that day to collect the current year's rent. Most peasants in the area around Agró were sharecroppers cultivating the land of absentee landlords and bound to these plantation owners both by contr…

    Thomas W Gallant•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•1989•Cited by: 8

Crisis and Response: Risk-Buffering Behavior in Hellenistic Greek Communities In the wake of the severe famines of the past twenty years, historians have become more sensitive to the problems of nutritional standards, food supply, and food shortage. In this article, I argue that the historically documented increase in the incidences of subsistence crises in the poleis (states) of Greece during the Hellenistic period, 323144 B.C., was due to a cha…

Greek Bandits: Lone Wolves or a Family Affair? Γ. W. Gallant Since the work of Eric Hobsbawm (1959, 1969, 1973), the social bandit has come to occupy an important place in the study of peasant unrest and violence in rural societies. Those following in his wake have either used the social bandit as an ideal type around which to structure research—even when their topic was not social transformation as Hobsbawm's had been—or have entered into a d…

The reforms of Solon have been a source of debate for many years now. The number of articles, chapters, and books written about them is legion. The justification for the present attempt is that it approaches the problem from a slightly different angle. The overriding aims of this paper are: ( a ) to elucidate what the agricultural system was in this period and to demonstrate that it did not ‘change with glacial slowness’ and that farmers were not…
