American Contradiction: Revolution and Revenge from the 1950s to Now
How did Americans come to elect Barack Obama—and then Donald Trump? Those choices capture what Paul Starr calls the American contradiction. The whole truth about America, Starr argues in this new history of the United States since the 1950s, has never been contained in one consistent set of values or interests. The nation was born in the contradiction between freedom and slavery. Today it is beset by a contradiction between a changing people and …
The Multiracial Complication: The 2020 Census and the Fictitious Multiracial Boom
The Census Bureau set off reports of a 'multiracial boom' when it announced that, according to the 2020 census, multiracial people accounted for 10.2 percent of the U.S. population. Only the year before, the bureau's American Community Survey had estimated their share as 3.4 percent. We provide evidence that the multiracial boom was largely a statistical illusion resulting from methodological changes that confounded ancestry with identity and mis…
Entrenchment: Wealth, Power, and the Constitution of Democratic Societies
Paul Starr’s new book, Entrenchment, is a very welcome addition to the admittedly crowded field of diagnoses of the current global moment of political backlash. It’s very nice prose and careful scholarship Bely a simple, but important, argument that the powerful have been able to protect their wealth and power by entrenching them in institutions that are difficult to change. It is not political polarization or partisanship that is the problem of …

Status Inconsistency and Marginality in Malaysia
Drawing upon the theory of status inconsistency and the theory of the marginal man, several hypotheses regarding the consequences of occupying an unusual combination of statuses were formulated and tested with data from a large sample survey of Malaysian secondary school students. Hierarchical modeling of incomplete contingency tables revealed that between-group differences on nine dependent variables for 26 status-combinations of race, religion,…

Community Structure and Vietnamese Refugee Adaptation: The Significance of Context
This article examines the significance of understanding the refugee experience as a product of the relationship between individual refugees and the larger social context or environment. It suggests that studies focusing upon such relationships, linking both micro and macrolevel data, could provide useful insights about refugee adaptation in varied contexts. To illustrate the usefulness of such an approach, an analysis of the effects of community …

Marginality, Role Conflict, and Status Inconsistency as Forms of Stressful Interaction
Many sociologists have hypothesized that persons who possess inconsistent or conflicting attributes will tend to experience stress and manifest certain psychological characteristics which are markedly different from those who possess ordinary combinations of attributes. This problem has been regarded from three theoretical perspectives, the "theories" of the marginal man, role conflict, and status inconsistency. After examining the ways in which …
