  • Analysis of engagement motivations for leisure and cognition in older adults participating in lifelong learning

Open Access•Karen Carnicello Wenzel, Marieke Van Puymbroeck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•2026

Research indicates that engagement in leisure activities can significantly contribute to the preservation of cognition in aging. However, limited attention has been given to the role of leisure motivations in shaping cognitive well-being. This cross-sectional study examines 344 older adults participating in lifelong learning, a population characterized by high engagement in intellectually stimulating leisure activities and indicators of successfu…

    Open Access•Peter R Lewis, Stephen R Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Technology and Society…•2023

g ReseaRcheRs who have worked in computer science or artificial intelligence for more than a few years will have experienced a profound shift in the public perception of their field from being something that people rarely cared about outside of sci-fi or niche academic or "geek" interest to something that is suddenly everywhere all over the world and seems to be permeating every field and every product. How should we respond to this? This challenge…

Open Access•Mohammad Bahadori, Juntao Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2022

Soil characteristics vary across land uses, and soil microbial communities are likely to respond to such variations. However, such responses are not well understood. In this study, we examined how specific changes in soil organic matter (SOM) and geochemical characteristics influenced the bacterial and fungal community composition and structure across land uses. Soil samples were collected from grazing, sugarcane, forest and banana land uses in t…

  • The NSSI Paradox: Discussing and Displaying NSSI in an Online Environment

Karen Rodham, Jeff Gavin et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2016•References: 21

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is commonly shared online. In the offline world, secrecy is a sign of "real" or authentic self-injury; therefore, openly sharing NSSI in the online context could be considered a paradoxical behavior. We explored how users of an online NSSI site negotiated this apparent paradox. Contrary to our expectations, contributing text and photographs to an online site did not appear to compromise authentic identity. We sugge…

    Open Access•Olga Sutherland, Andrea Breen et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 11

This article offers an innovation in narrative analysis afforded by incorporating analytic concepts from discourse analysis. We share some examples from our study of online autobiographical accounts of non - suicidal self - injury (NSSI) to illustrate the various aspects of a discursive narrative approach to research. We show how the participants construct events and experiences as sequentially linked and temporarily related using a range of disc…

    Open Access•Rick A López, Stephen E Lewis et al.•BOOK•Eagle and the Virgin•2006

When the fighting of the Mexican Revolution died down in 1920, the national government faced the daunting task of building a cohesive nation. It had to establish control over a disparate and needy population and prepare the country for global economic competition. As part of this effort, the government enlisted the energy of artists and intellectuals in cultivating a distinctly Mexican identity. It devised a project for the incorporation of indig…

I will use this opportunity instead to pursue the theme of Access to Care in the context of children orphaned by AIDS and other vul…

The lives of African children are touched daily by the tragedy of death, and death is their greatest fear. Since the pandemic of AIDS began in the late 1970s more than 16 million Africans have died. The 25.3 million Africans living with AIDS have virtually no access to the anti-retroviral drugs that are readily available in the West. While pharmaceutical companies and western governments discuss bringing pharmaceuticals to HIV-infected Africans, …

Stephen E Lewis, Stephen Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•1998

Despite over fifty years of literacy training by the Mexican government, the National Census records an illiteracy rate of over 70 percent in most Indian communities. This book attempts to discover why so many Indians are illiterate today despite an indigenous literary tradition that dates back to the pre-Conquest period. The author sees language as the main factor explaining the high illiteracy rate in the Indian regions. Although alphabets have…

    Open Access•Stephen P Lewis, Stephen Lewis•ARTICLE•Health and Human Rights•1997•Cited by: 1

I want to fashion a thesis which will not commend itself to some, because there is a kind of breezy dismissal, underscored occasionally by an unwarranted contemptuousness, insofar as the rights of children are concerned, there is also some considerable jaundice and skepticism about international conventions generally-a tendency to see them as a kind of intellectual rigor mortis of the multilateral system. Nevertheless, I will make an argument. Le…
