Ed Turner, Simon Green et al.•ARTICLE•German Politics•2013•Cited by: 2

This article introduces the special issue on the transformation of German Christian Democracy and sets the context for organisational and policy change in the CDU. As a starting point, it identifies both contemporary challenges to the CDU, locating its discussion within the wider literature on European Christian Democracy, and considers the extent to which these apply to the German case. It then outlines the key dimensions of the contemporary CDU…

Open Access•William Paterson, William G Paterson•BOOK•Narrative of Four Journeys into…•2012

Later known as an administrator in Australia and founder of one of Tasmania's earliest settlements, William Paterson (1755–1810) was an army officer, naturalist and friend of Joseph Banks. Keenly interested in botany from childhood, in 1777 he was dispatched to Cape Colony on an expedition to collect plant specimens, many of which remain in the Natural History Museum. His accounts, published in 1789, are the observations and impressions of one of…

  • Is the left alright? The SPD and the renewal of European social democracy

    William Paterson, James Sloam•ARTICLE•German Politics•2006•Cited by: 8

The late 1990s appeared to herald a new dawn for European social democracy. Social democratic governments were elected to office in Germany, the UK and France (and participated in governments in 12 of the 15 EU states). For the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the British Labour Party, this took place after long periods in opposition. For the French Socialist Party (PS), its victory in legislative elections signalled a remarkable comeback…

  • The European policy-making machinery in the Berlin republic: Hindrance or Handmaiden

Bulmer, Simon Bulmer et al.•ARTICLE•German Politics•2001•Cited by: 4

This article examines European policy-making in the Berlin Republic. The basic puzzle explored is whether the policy machinery is able to facilitate the projection of a ‘new European policy’, characterised by greater emphasis upon national interests. In order to suggest answers, the article reviews the origins of the policy machinery and the changes made in the pre-unification period. It then explores the current situation in the Berlin Republic.…

  • Britain and the Berlin Republic: Between Ambivalence and Emulation

    William Paterson•ARTICLE•German Politics•2001•Cited by: 1

This contribution is primarily concerned with British perceptions of post-unity Germany. European integration is the intervening variable which helps to explain both British official anxieties about Germany and a degree of emulation. Employing the language of historical institutionalism, it posits two critical junctures. The Thatcher critical juncture led to wholesale policy transfer from the United States to Britain in the economic and social po…

  • Britain and the European Union Revisited: Some Unanswered Questions

    Open Access•William Paterson•ARTICLE•Scottish Affairs•1994•Cited by: 2•References: 3

The relationship between Britain and the European Union has attracted a great deal of academic analysis of a mainly historical narrative character. This has often been written in terms reminiscent of the Sonderweg (unique path) tendency in German historical writings of the 1960s and 1970s. These writings stressed Germany's historical uniqueness and sought for historically determined explanations of its departure from the path of democratic virtue…

  • The Rise and Fall of the West German Left

Stephen Padgett, William Paterson•ARTICLE•New left review•1991

Left politics in West Germany in the period 1945–90 were marked first by the rise of the spd, leading to its participation in government in the years 1966–82, and then by a sequence of election defeats, each more serious than the last. The strength of spd

  • Large firms as political actors: A comparative analysis of the chemical industry in Britain, Italy and West Germany

Wyn Grant, Alberto Martinelli et al.•ARTICLE•West European Politics•1989•Cited by: 11•References: 4

Large firms as political actors are compared in the chemical industry in three countries. In West Germany, co‐ordinated action through the industry associations is important, but firms are developing their own political capabilities. In Italy links with political parties are important, but the operating environment of firms has become less politicised. Britain conforms more to a 'company state' model, with the government relations divisions of fi…
