    Gordon Martel•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2015

It comes as no surprise that our interest in the past reflects our current preoccupations. This has been the case since Herodotus and Thucydides, both of whom turned to history to discover how to live in the present. Our concern with the clashes of civilizations and cultures, empires and states has been one of the few constants in historical research over the last two millennia. But fashions come and go, and our fascination with the origins of wa…

  • The Origins of World History: Arnold Toynbee before the First World War

    Open Access•Gordon Martel•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Politics &…•2004

Arnold Toynbee's ambitious work A Study of History was a phenomenal publishing success in its day, but it came under severe criticism from academic historians. In recent years, there has been something of a Toynbee revival among the proponents of the growing discipline of world history. This article suggests that Toynbee makes a somewhat unlikely founding figure for the broadly liberal and cosmopolitan world history movement, and investigates the…

  • Decolonisation after Suez: Retreat or Rationalisation

    Open Access•Gordon Martel•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Politics &…•2000

Did the Suez crisis mark the end of empire in Britain and France, their submission to the political domination of the United States and the beginnings of a ‘new Europe’? Or did it stimulate a rethinking and reformulation of the meaning of empire, its utility and costs? This article argues that the ‘retreat from empire’ was not so much a simple, reflexive response to demands from below but a conscious effort by those from above to find new ways of…

  • Liberalism and nationalism in the Middle East: Britain and the Balkan crisis of 1886

    Gordon Martel•ARTICLE•Middle Eastern Studies•1985•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Whenever one government is replaced by another, observers immediately begin to speculate on the possible consequences of the change. Proclamations, which have usually been issued in advance of the change, might act as a guide to observers. Occasionally these proclamations are dramatic, even shocking, as when, in the midst of revolutionary upheaval, it is announced that a new ideology will result in new policies and new directions. More often, in …

  • The Limits of Commitment: Rosebery and the Definition of the Anglo-German Understanding

    Open Access•Gordon Martel•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•1984•References: 4

The 1890s can easily be portrayed as the era of missed opportunities in Anglo-German relations. Before the Kruger telegram, the Boer War, the Boxer rebellion and the Berlin to Bagdad railway, and most particularly before the naval race, it seems possible that Britain and Germany might have drawn closer together and that areas of mutual interest might have led to co-operation rather than antagonism. The failure to draw together in the 1890s, it ca…
