  • Conscription, Collaboration, and Self-Cutting in Rural Senegal During and After World War II

Open Access•Dennis Galvan, Dennis C Galvan•CHAPTER•Everyday Life in Mass Dictatorship•2016

During and after World War II, rural Senegalese conscripts experienced coercion, collaboration, and moments of unauthorised control as they were recruited to, survived, and took creative advantage of European military service. Massive mobilisation of Senegalese recruits not only helped to liberate France, it also afforded new opportunities for willful action in the spaces between collusion and evasion, collaboration and resistance. These keywords…

  • Political Creativity

Dennis Galvan, Gerald Berk et al.•BOOK•Political Creativity•2014

Political Creativity intervenes in the lively debate over institutional change by showing how rules and roles are always subject to reconfiguration. Ever-present creative action is explored in many settings, from land boards in Botswana to civil rights in the US.

    Open Access•Sarah F Taub, Sarah Taub et al.•ARTICLE•Cognitive Linguistics•2009•Cited by: 1

Comparisons between spoken and sign languages have always been difficult to make, given the linear nature of spoken language grammar versus the spatial, three-dimensional nature of sign language. A better understanding of the role that spatially expressed information plays in shaping the information structure of both spoken and sign languages holds the promise of providing an additional tool to better assess typological differences crosslinguisti…

Open Access•Dennis Galvan, Rounak Sil et al.•CHAPTER•Reconfiguring Institutions Across…•2007

Forty years ago, Reinhard Bendix (1967) attacked the “invidious distinction between modernity and tradition” upon which then-prevailing approaches to political and economic development were predicated. Around the same time, a number of other scholars began to identify processes through which quintessentially “traditional” social formations became resilient elements of new strategies and structures in the pursuit of “modern” developmental ends (Ri…

  • The social reproduction of community-based development

    Open Access•Dennis Galvan, Dennis C Galvan•ARTICLE•The Journal of Modern African…•2007•Cited by: 3

This article traces the rise and decline of a grassroots community organisation in rural Senegal. It has three aims. First, it problematises the sometimes idealistic nature of the rhetoric and literature on community-based development. Second, it suggests three factors that contribute to the effectiveness of rural self-help organisations: educated and technocratically skilled leadership, unintentionally benevolent state neglect, and a willingness…

Over several centuries, the Serer of the Siin region of Senegal developed a complex system of land tenure that resulted in a stable rural society, productive agriculture, and a well-managed ecosystem. Dennis Galvan tells the story of what happened when French colonial rulers, and later the government of the newly independent Senegal, imposed new systems of land tenure and cultivation on the Serer of Siin.
