Behind kitchens’ doors: A case study on gendered dynamics in Italian canteens
This article examines how gender hierarchies are reproduced and negotiated within Italian institutional catering kitchens. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in a large catering cooperative in Northern Italy, the study combines three months of participant observation across multiple cooking centres with seventeen semi-structured interviews with kitchen workers and supervisors. The analysis highlights a persistent paradox: although women c…

Gender in Youth Participation: Practices and Cultures
The phenomenon of youth participation has come to occupy a central place in contemporary sociological, political and cultural inquiry. In both scholarly and policy discourses, youth are frequently portrayed as pivotal agents of democratic renewal, social innovation, and cultural transformation. However, this pervasive focus has frequently entailed an unmarked and ostensibly neutral subject – “the youth” – whose identity remains implicitly male, h…

Young Women’s Informal Leadership: Reflections on Taking Responsibility in Youth Participation
This article aims to enhance understanding of young women’s experiences in political participation by examining their practices of ‘informal leadership’ within Italian and German radical grassroots organizations. It explores the biographical pathways that lead young women to assume leadership roles and highlights the often invisible practices of responsibility that challenge traditional power dynamics. Drawing on gender and feminist studies, the …
"More Than "Crumbs: Emotional Entanglements and Situated Ethical Strategies in Qualitative Research
Emotional entanglements developing between researchers and participants are an unavoidable experience in qualitative research, whose methods largely rely on emotions, intimacy, and relationships. Despite urged to exercise reflexivity, researchers rarely have the opportunity to deconstruct the emotional aspects of their investigations, which are often perceived as problems rather than as resources. Drawing on feminist methodology, this article arg…
In pausa: I giovani e la gestione del “tempo vuoto” durante la pandemia da Covid-19
Discussing the results of a qualitative research conducted with Italian university students (19-27 years), the article analyses young people’s time management strategies during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic. The research highlights how the forced deceleration imposed by anti-Covid policies has rarely translated into a conscious “practice of the present” (Sloterdijk 2007). Rather, young people’s experience of the time during the pandemic…
NextGenerationEU as a (more) youth-friendly Europe
In many countries across Europe, youth conditions and intergenerational inequalities have frequently remained at the margins of political interest and a residual topic in discourses on welfare and in social policies. Difficulties in transitions to adulthood and issues of social inclusion of youth have, for a long time, been conceived of as problems to be addressed largely by acting on families rather than through policy measures addressing young …
Liminal Participation: Young People's Practices in the Public Sphere Between Exclusion, Claims of Belonging, and Democratic Innovation
Existing understandings of youth participation often imply clear distinctions from non-participation and thus boundaries between 'recognized' and 'non-recognized' practices of engagement. This article aims at questioning these boundaries. It analyzes young people's practices in the public sphere that are characterized by both recognition as participation and misrecognition or stigmatization as deviant and it is suggested to conceptualize such pra…
Young People's Participation: Revisiting Youth and Inequalities in Europe
Young people’s participation is an urgent policy and practice concern, across countries and context. This book showcases original research evidence and analysis to consider how, under what conditions and for what purposes young people participate in different parts of Europe. Focusing on the interplay between the concepts of youth, inequality and participation, this book explores how structural changes including economic austerity, neoliberal pol…

This article looks at the characteristics of contemporary sports audiences from the perspective of gender, focusing on the phenomenon of female ultras or ‘professional’ football fans. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in an Italian football ultras group composed of male and female fans, this paper offers an analysis of female participation in communities of organized supporters. In examining the role and position of women inside the cons…

What does being an adult mean? Comparing young people’s and adults’ representations of adulthood
This article aims at exploring the representations young people and adults attribute to the concept of adulthood in order to analyse the effects these ideas have on their reciprocal perception and recognition. In so doing, it draws upon data collected through a grounded theory study, which has been conducted in Italy involving young people and adults in semi-structured qualitative interviews. Data show that an outdated traditional model is still …
