  • Female Spirituality in the Devotio Moderna

    Open Access•Mathilde Van Dijk•ARTICLE•Church History and Religious…•2025

In a Low Countries urban context, it is not surprising that the Devotio Moderna appealed mostly to women. From the rise of the Poverty Movement from the twelfth century, contemporary sources report that the ideal of vita apostolica et evangelica attracted women first and foremost. Many chose a life without vows, as Beguines. Some acted as spiritual leaders. In the 1370s, Geert Grote intended to put a stop to what was seen as undesirable effects o…

  • Fictional and fictionalised religions as heritage? Reflections on the object of critical heritage studies

    Open Access•Mathilde Van Dijk•ARTICLE•International Journal of Heritage…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 23

This article attempts to make a connection between two fields, that usually operate in separate intellectual contexts: critical research on heritage as a social practice and the study of historical and fantasy fiction, concentrating on renditions of the Middle Ages. Both the construction of heritage and the creation of a fictional narrative are ways of processing of the past, although, at first sight, opposites. Claiming a site as heritage and th…

  • Living with Time

    Open Access•Mathilde Van Dijk•ARTICLE•Religions•2020•References: 16

At first sight, Denis Villeneuve's 2016 Arrival seems to provide a fairly standard science fiction narrative about the landing of aliens on earth and the panic that ensues, featuring aggressive soldiers, a suspicious CIA man, brilliant scientists and rioting populaces. The film could be read as propaganda for the humanities as it is a linguist rather than a natural scientist who saves the world. The second narrative is more important, as acknowle…

  • Working with Tradition, Aiming for Reform

Mathilde Van Dijk•ARTICLE•Church History and Religious…•2016

This article examines how the Carthusian Peter Dorlandus (1454–1507) rewrote the material about well-known saints like Joseph of Nazareth, Catherine of Alexandria, Cecilia of Rome, and Francis of Assisi so as to serve in the reformation both of individual believers and of the Church. He experimented with different genres: the traditional hagiographical genre of a vita, a hybrid text between the sermon and the vita, and the dialogue. Saint Joseph …

    Mathilde Van Dijk•ARTICLE•Ons Geestelijk Erf•2009

The adherents of the Devotio Moderna regarded the Church Fathers as reliable guides in their search for true piety, which they defined as the imitation of Christ. This article discusses the role of one of the most important among them, Gregory the Great, and takes its point of departure from the surviving texts that were ascribed to him in the convent of Saint Agnes at Maaseik. The purpose is to study how these regular canonesses used Gregory in …

  • Disciples of the Deep Desert

Mathilde Van Dijk•ARTICLE•Church History and Religious…•2006

This article examines how biographers from the Chapter of Windesheim construed their brothers and sisters as the new desert fathers. In the Devotio Moderna, these first hermits, monks, and nuns were regarded as the epitomes of what true piety was about. Windesheim biographers like John Busch put their subjects forward as the new practitioners of true piety, as it had been coined by the desert fathers. But what did this mean to them? How did they …

"Over the past eighteen years, gender has become a major analytical tool in medieval studies. The purpose of this volume is to evaluate its use and to search for ways in which to improve and enhance its value. The authors address the question of how gender relates to other tools of medieval research. Several articles criticize the way in which an exclusive focus on gender tends to obscure the impact of other factors, for instance class, politics,…

    Open Access•Mathilde Van Dijk•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•2005

Sister Liesbeth of Heenvliet (d. 1450) was a scion of a high ranking noble family in the county of Holland. Her parents had named her after Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, from whom they were descended. Liesbeth was born blind. Her mother did not dare to inform the child’s father, Johan of Heenvliet. Instead, she appealed to God and His Mother. Contrary to what she should have done, she did not vow her daughter to God’s service. Despite her mother’s …

    Mathilde Van Dijk•ARTICLE•Ons Geestelijk Erf•2004

From the fourteenth century, the Dutch and the German language areas were the scenes of a revolution. There was a virtual explosion of texts in the vernacular, both original works and translations. The intended audience consisted of layfolk, inside and outside religious communities. This paper discusses a Middle Dutch copy of a most popular text on both sides of the present day border: the Decalogue by the Southern German Franciscan Marquard of L…
