Consumers’ capabilities, opportunities and motivations that drive single-use plastic (SUP) reduction
Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify enablers and barriers influencing single-use plastic (SUP) milk bottle volume reduction in New Zealand using the Capability–Opportunity–Motivation–Behaviour (COM-B) theory. Single-use plastic (SUP) milk bottles contribute significantly to plastic waste, yet when compared to other types of single-use plastic packaging (e.g. plastic bags), they have received far less research attention. Telling Fish Tales
“Social ecological systems” (SES) are circumstances where human activity and the natural world are interconnected and reciprocally influential. Ensuring these systems benefit the broader social and ecological communities is increasingly important as human activity grows. We aimed to provide novel insights about how workers make decisions about intervening in SES. We examined 32 SES fisheries interventions in British Columbia, Canada, through inte…
Living life ‘to the core’
Most of us will be familiar with the saying, ‘Find something you love to do, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life’. But is it accurate? Through interviews with individuals who have felt beckoned towards such an activity – in other words, who have a calling – we explain why this saying holds true for some, but not for others. We found that many called individuals have conditions, which are self-determined limitations on how, where and …

Barriers and facilitators of using dementia community support services provided by an Alzheimers organisation
Known barriers prevent informal caregivers of a person with dementia using community services; however, there is a dearth of knowledge on how organisations can overcome these barriers. This study examined caregivers' perceptions of the barriers and facilitators of service use with regards to their membership to one Alzheimers organisation and their recommendations for improvements. In-depth interviews were conducted with 19 informal caregivers. T…
Killing them with kindness”? A study of service employees' responses to uncivil customers
Experiencing uncivil customers is a frequent reality for many people working in the service industry. Past research has established that dealing with uncivil customers can be distressing for employees and can sometimes lead them to engage in reciprocal, discourteous behavior. The purpose of our research is to delve deeper into the experience of customer incivility from the perspective of service employees in order to better understand the various…
Experience, Emotion, and Eudaimonia
Experiential marketing and the quest to create memorable and extraordinary customer experiences have become central to tourism. However, implementing the concept of experiential marketing has been problematic due to a lack of knowledge regarding what makes experiences memorable, as well as inattention to the subjective and personal nature of experiences. This study explores the nature of individual experiences, particularly with regard to persona…

An Empirical Investigation of Variations in Real‐Estate Marketing Language over a Market Cycle
The present study examines the language of residential property listings under different market conditions. Property listings in one of New Zealand’s most popular property magazines were examined over an eight year period, during which time both a buoyant and slower market were experienced. One magazine from the month of September for the years 2001–2008 was coded for the incidence of 13 variables. Findings revealed linguistic variations as a fun…
Intimate Partner Violence
The present study compared the communication behavior of individuals with and without histories of intimate partner violence (IPV). Specifically, the authors examined participants' use of and accommodation toward facilitative and nonfacilitative language features as a function of their abuse histories. The findings revealed that perpetrators and victims of IPV used fewer facilitative and polite language features. Additionally, men with histories …
Children's Speech Accommodation to Gendered Language Styles
Research has shown that adults accommodate to the speech style of their conversational partner. For men, this accommodation is mediated by gender role beliefs. Speech accommodation and factors influencing this behavior during middle childhood have received little attention. The present study examined children's speech accommodation as functions of their gender role beliefs, age, and gender. A male and a female experimenter, trained to use both ma…
