Self- and Not-Self-Determined Solitude: French Version of the Motivation for Solitude Scale
Thomas and Azmitia (2019, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.adolescence.2018.11.004) proposed a short version of the Motivation for Solitude Scale. They tested this short form using a population of emerging adults and adolescents and they presented both the psychometric characteristics of this scale and its links with several adjustment factors. The aim of this study was to propose a French version of this scale. We translated this scale in French and te…
Women with disabilities: Impact of double categorization on stereotypes
Stereotypes of women and people with disabilities can be a source of discrimination. Recent models of social judgments distinguish between two main dimensions of stereotypes – warmth (i.e., sociability, morality) and competence (i.e., motivation, ability to achieve objectives). In the present study, we used Louvet and Rohmer’s (2010) paradigm to test the effect of the intersection of gender and disability on social judgments of a person’s warmth,…
Deleterious effects of unchosen solitude on adolescents' mental and social health: The moderating role of self‐esteem
Can self‐esteem reduce the deleterious effects of solitude on adolescents' mental and social health? Solitude is twofold because it can be chosen (self‐determined) or forced (not self‐determined). When it is not a chosen behavior (e.g., social ignorance, exclusion, or fear of others' judgment), individuals experience higher levels of anxiety and depression and feel the deleterious effects of loneliness more. On the other hand, the level of self‐e…
Dyadic Adjustment in Couples: How Partners' Social Value Within Couple and Emotional Competences Predict It
Knowing the determinants of couple adjustment is a challenge, both for predicting this adjustment and for helping couples in therapy in the best possible way. We based this study on the Personâ€TMs Social Value Theory (Beauvois, J.-L. [1976]. The topic of social conduct evaluation. Connexions, 19, 7-30) which postulates that two dimensions â€" social utility and social desirability â€" support self- and other- descriptions. This study aimed to ev…
Motives for Secondary Social Sharing of Emotions
This study provides new evidence of motives of secondary social sharing of emotions. In a retrospective study, 140 female (Mage = 29.4 yr., SD=12.8) and 116 male (M = 29.5 yr., SD = 13.1) participants were asked to recall a recent situation in which they had talked to a third person about a positive or negative, low or high intensity emotional narrative they had heard. 70% of the respondents reported having secondarily shared the reported event r…
