Charisma and the Transformation of Western Culture 12th to 13th Centuries
The academic discussion of charisma takes two major voices as the point of departure: Max Weber and St. Paul. In both areas, sociology and religion, charisma is seen as a quality of persons. My argument is that entire cultures can be suffused by this force, and that social life, education, and modes of expression can be bearers and transmitters of charismatic force. I approach the argument conceptually, drawing on a remarkable passage in Goethe's…

Mary Carruthers. The Experience of Beauty in the Middle Ages
The Experience of Beauty in the Middle Ages is a jumble of interesting and perceptive insights into the conceptual underpinnings of medieval art, architecture, and literature. Mary Carruthers’s scholarship is wide-ranging, and her depth of knowledge is evident. The book represents a new, fresh, and welcome approach to medieval aesthetics. But it has severe limits. The author distinguishes her approach from the metaphysical/theological perspective…
Alcuin and the Music of Friendship
Alcuin and the Music of Friendship1 C. Stephen Jaeger (bio) 798 was not a good year for Saxons. Chafing under harsh edicts issued by Charlemagne a decade and a half before, and smarting from strings of disastrous defeats, they seized and murdered royal legates in early 798. Outraged, Charlemagne gathered a great army, which came together at Minden on the Weser River in July and mounted a terrible campaign of destruction, moving from the Weser to …
The Clerical Dilemma
John Cotts’s study of Peter of Blois faces two difficulties from the outset: the complexities of Peter’s character and the opaqueness of his class as a subject for historical analysis. The author opts for a judicious negotiation of tangled indicators and bodies of evidence. Single lines of argument have made Peter of Blois into a humanist of dubious reputation (R.W. Southern), a plagiarist (Philippe Delhaye), and a grovelling and ambitious courti…
Aura and Charisma
Critical theory has made little use of “aura” and virtually none of “charisma.” Drawing on passages from Homer and Marcel Proust, this article broadens the view of aura that has developed among Walter Benjamin and his commentators and adds to the view of Max Weber and his commentators charisma as a useful concept for understanding elements of fiction and of representation generally. Charisma is a quality of persons; aura can rise up from things, …

Ennobling Love
Richard, Duke of Aquitaine, son of the King of England, remained with Philip, the King of France, who so honored him for so long that they ate every day at the same table and from the same dish, and at night their beds did not separate them. And the King of France loved him as his own soul; and they loved each other so much that the King of England was absolutely astonished at the vehement love between them and marveled at what it could mean. Pub…
