The Problems of England’s Present
History and Religion the Book of Howth
Christopher Maginn. William Cecil, Ireland, and the Tudor State
“To write his history as it deserves to be written would be to write the history of England during the latter half of the sixteenth century; for no statesman was ever so completely identified with the duties of his office as Sir William Cecil.” Thus wrote the Victorian scholar J. W. Burgon. Burgon has been heeded by most historians of the Elizabethan period over the past century, with only a few brave souls such as Conyers Read, B. W. Beckingsale…
James Anthony Froude
James Anthony Froude is among the most frequently cited but gravely misunderstood figures in Victorian intellectual life. Known in part by students of historiography, literary scholars, theological students, specialists in nineteenth‐century theories of race, imperialism, and education, and historians of Ireland, his life and thought have been fragmented, and the significance of his often provocative writings and actions has been seriously underr…

British Interventions in Early Modern Ireland
This book offers a perspective on Irish History from the late sixteenth to the end of the seventeenth century. Many of the chapters address, from national, regional and individual perspectives, the key events, institutions and processes that transformed the history of early modern Ireland. Others probe the nature of Anglo-Irish relations, Ireland's ambiguous constitutional position during these years and the problems inherent in running a multipl…
The Chief Governors
This book offers an extended reinterpretation of English policy in Ireland over the sixteenth century. It seeks to show that the major conflicts between Tudor governors and native lords which characterised the period were not the result of a deliberate Tudor strategy of confrontation, but arose from a failed experiment in legal reform and cultural assimilation which had been applied with remarkable success elsewhere in the Tudor dominions. The bo…

Faction and the origins of the Desmond rebellion of 1579
Alone amongst the major rebellions of the sixteenth century the Desmond rebellion of 1579 seems to have retained its romantic fascination untarnished. While the rebellions of 1534 and 1569 and the major uprising in Ulster at the end of the century have each been subjected to critical historical analysis, the uprising of the last Desmond earl seems to contain a mysterious element which has somehow deflected all attempts at detached assessment, and…
