Measuring Poverty

Spending Responses to the Child Tax Credit Expansions
This article summarizes research literature that has studied how people used the advance Child Tax Credit (CTC) payments that were disbursed by the IRS in 2021. Four primary findings emerge. The ways in which families used the advance CTC payments varied: during the first few months the payments were being distributed, families reported paying down debt more frequently; and in the final months of the payments, families reported more frequent spen…
Millstone and Grindstone Production in the Pennines and North-west England
A survey of millstone and grindstone production sites in the western Pennines of north-west England has identified 54 sites. Combining archival research with field survey, the production of millstone roughouts was identified at varying scales at each site, with evidence for the production of grindstones and edge runners apparent at several of the sites. We document changes in U.S. children's family household composition from 1968 to 2017 with regard to the number and types of kin that children lived with and the frequency of family members' household entrances and departures. Data are from the U.S. Panel Study of Income Dynamics (N = 30,412). As part of a broader study of traditional farm buildings in the Ingleborough area of the Yorkshire Dales National Park fifteen early buildings were subjected to Level 2 surveying and tree-ring dating funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund’s Ingleborough Dales Landscape Partnership. Felling dates were obtained for all but four of the buildings with an overall total of 45 dates obtained for timbers. Only five post-date the year 1700 and seven…

The Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) is the world's longest running household panel survey. Consumer Spending and the Economic Stimulus Payments of 2008
We measure the change in household spending caused by receipt of the economic stimulus payments of 2008, using questions added to the Consumer Expenditure Survey and variation from the randomized timing of disbursement. Households spent 12–30 percent (depending on specification) of their payments on nondurable goods during the three-month period of payment receipt, and a significant amount more on durable goods, primarily vehicles, bringing the t…

Using questions expressly added to the Consumer Expenditure Survey, we estimate the change in consumption expenditures caused by the 2001 federal income tax rebates and test the permanent income hypothesis. We exploit the unique, randomized timing of rebate receipt across households.
