Practices of Comparing and Conceptual Change in Early Molecular Biology
We consider strategies of drawing comparisons between conceptually different approaches as practiced by scientists in mid-twentieth century molecular biology or biochemistry. The two accounts of spatial complementarity and sequential order used to explain biological processes at the molecular level, and in particular genetic mechanisms are non-commensurable: they share no significant conceptual common ground. This conceptual divide is dealt with …
Wissenschaftsreflexion
Academic freedom and societal respect for science have been decreasing in the past years in the wake of growing nationalism, authoritarianism, and fundamentalism. Even in liberal democracies, science has been attacked by anti-science movements. One of the reasons for the weakening credibility of scientific knowledge is its exaggerated use in framing policy questions. Conflicts about interests and values are transformed into controversies about th…
Narratives of contingency and practices of comparing in the emergence of German molecular genetics (1958–1968)
This article explores the emergence of molecular approaches in German genetic research during the 1958-1968 decade as a period of contingency and alternative possibilities. We introduce "Narratives of Contingency" as an analytical framework to examine how scientists construct a specific narrative - linking past experiences with expectations of future conditions - in order to outline and navigate pathway-decisions in the present. We apply this fra…

This essay offers a new approach for conceptualizing the environmental impact of chemicals production, consumption, disposal, and regulation. Environmental protection regimes tend to be highly segmented according to place, media, substance, and effect. Existing scholarship often reflects this same segmentation, by focusing on a locality, specific chemical, social movement, or regulatory body. In turn, as new environmental measures are introduced …

Regulierungswissen und Regulierungskonzepte
Regulatory Knowledge and Regulatory Concepts. The article argues for a historical understanding of a specific form of knowledge which is attached to the practices of regulatory science: regulatory knowledge. By definition, regulatory science deals with problems that are thought of not belonging to the normal spectrum of scientific work, i. e., they are ‘trans‐scientific’. In order to bridge science and other social spheres, regulatory science and…

Historische Wissenschaftsforschung, heute. Überlegungen zu einer Geschichte der Wissensgesellschaft
Historical Science Studies Today. Thoughts about a History of the Knowledge Society. The article explores theoretical and historiographical approaches in the field of historical science studies, while focusing on the history of the knowledge society. It argues that a straightforward transfer of the concept of knowledge society into the past has to be pursued with care, favorably with an extraction of some analytical key concepts. This extraction …

Wissenstransfer durch Zentrenbildung. Physikalische Methoden in der Chemie und den Biowissenschaften
From the 1950s to 1970s, physical techniques replaced many classical methods in the chemical and biological sciences. In this development, a novel type of method‐oriented scientists emerged, relying on cooperation with instrument manufacturers and forging close links with science‐funding agencies. Their main engagement was the development of methods and the improvement of instruments, responding to the needs of the chemical and biomedical communi…
A Lead User of Instruments in Science
During the 1960s organic chemistry underwent a spectacular transformation as a result of the introduction of high-tech instruments. In this process, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) became an important analytical technique in organic chemistry. The theme of this essay is the relationship of Varian Associates of Palo Alto, California, the major manufacturer of NMR spectrometers up to the 1970s, with one early and crucial user, the organic chemist …
