Science in the City: Contesting the City Architect’s Office in Toronto
The City of Toronto experienced a major dispute over the functions of the office of the City Architect in the years just before World War One. Running through the dispute was the issue of science in the City. Did the City need, in the administration of technicalities and the addressing of technical questions, persons with a greater degree of scientific competency—as distinct from more traditionally trained personnel? Rhetorically, the question to…
The Second Industrial Revolution and the Staples Frontier in Canada: Rethinking Knowledge And History
In the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century the exploitation of Canada's softwood forests was transformed by the new technologies of the second Industrial Revolution. This can be understood in terms of Innis's staple thesis as the exploitation of natural resources on a margin for and using the technology of a more advanced Euro-American centre. The sociology of knowledge also provides a framework for analysis as old and new bod…
Raising Standards: Public Works and Industrial Practice in Interwar Ontario
Public works and the bodies which build them or contract for their building are important to the history of standards for a variety of reasons. The sheer size, significance and ubiquity of such works, make standards practice important in and of itself. The rigour used in enforcing those standards on contractors and suppliers, while exerting a force for the improvement of industrial practice, also had the secondary effect of favouring those firms …

Recently published letters of Dr Karl A. Clark, who worked from 1920 to 1949 on the hot water separation process for extracting petroleum from the Athabasca oil sands, and records of Dr Clara W. Fritz, who, in the 1930s, examined the problem of pulp mill slime which weakened and discoloured paper products offer insights into how Canadian scientists worked in an international network of scientists. What were the roles played by these scientists in…

Technical Standards and the Integration of the U.S. and Canadian Economies
Introduction A March 1943 editorial in the Quarterly Bulletin of the Canadian Engineering Standards Association (CESA) noted the role being played by technical standards in the growing U.S. trade hegemony in Central and South America. (1) Stirred but not shaken by evidence that the days of Britain's informal Latin American empire were over, the editor warned that Canada must respond appropriately. In fact, by this time Canadian business had for d…

Impact of therapist vacations on inpatients with borderline personality disorder
For patients with borderline personality disorder, separations from significant figures in their lives, including therapists, are thought to be particularly painful. According to clinical wisdom, these patients manifest aggressive and self-destructive behavior around the time of separation. However, virtually no empirical studies have been conducted to test these beliefs. In this study, the behaviors of a sample of 41 inpatients with borderline p…
