    Florencia Garcia-Vicente, Daniel D Garcia-Swartz et al.•ARTICLE•Information & Culture•2016

This article is the second part of a comprehensive study on the rise of America’s early computer clusters from the perspective of evolutionary economic geography. Florencia Garcia-Vicente, Daniel D Garcia-Swartz et al.•ARTICLE•Information & Culture•2016

This study is an interpretation of the early computer industry in America from the perspective of evolutionary economic geography. We analyze the County Business Patterns microdata files for the 1970s and identify a variety of early computer clusters. We explore the economic factors that led to the formation of these clusters, including preexisting conditions and Marshallian externalities, and suggest that a combination of these factors goes a lo…

  • Clustering in the Creative Industries

    Martin Campbell-Kelly, Martin Campbell‐Kelly et al.•ARTICLE•Industry and Innovation•2010

We use several different sources (a 1970 Roster of Organizations in Data Processing and the 1960 and 1970 Censuses of Population) to study patterns of geographic clustering at the very origins of the software industry. We find a strong trend toward clustering of the industry in a few metropolitan areas. Furthermore, we uncover a tendency in the early software industry to agglomerate in close proximity to some of its main customers. This tendency …

The computer-services and software industry used to be conveniently divided into three main sectors: mass-market software vendors, enterprise software vendors, and computer services. The three sectors were distinct, because personal computers, corporate mainframes, and online computer networks operated in relative isolation. The arrival of the Internet effectively connected everything, facilitating the entry of mass-market vendors into enterprise…

  • When Information Came of Age

    Martin Campbell-Kelly, Martin Campbell‐Kelly•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•2001

Daniel Headrick's excellent book probably could not have been conceived fifteen years ago, before the emergence of the Internet and the World Wide Web. The book embodies the truism that each generation of historians reinterprets the past for the readers of its own day. It belongs to a growing genre that seeks to expose the historical origins of our present information age--other recent examples include Michael Hobart and Zachary Schiffman's Infor…

In the thirteen years following the introduction of IBM's first personal computer in 1982, Microsoft rose from being a small concern to become the colossus of the PC software industry. However, Microsoft was not the only software company to profit from the PC-software boom: firms like AutoDesk, Lotus Development, WordPerfect Corp., Ashton-Tate, Novell, Borland, Adobe Systems, Aldus, Symantec, and the Santa Cruz Operation all had their time in the…
