  • Global rise in human infectious disease outbreaks

Open Access•Katherine Smith, Katherine F Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of The Royal Society…•2014

To characterize the change in frequency of infectious disease outbreaks over time worldwide, we encoded and analysed a novel 33-year dataset (1980–2013) of 12 102 outbreaks of 215 human infectious diseases, comprising more than 44 million cases occuring in 219 nations. We merged these records with ecological characteristics of the causal pathogens to examine global temporal trends in the total number of outbreaks, disease richness (number of uniq…

  • How Firms Cope with Crime and Violence

Michael Goldberg, Michael E Goldberg et al.•BOOK•How firms cope with crime and…•2014

Crime and violence inflict high costs on the private sector—costs that are rising globally, according to the World Bank’s Enterprise Surveys, discussions with chambers and associations, and the Bank’s Country Partnership Strategies, which reference the losses in terms of gross domestic product (GDP). In Latin America and the Caribbean, for example, losses due to crime and violence have been estimated at 9 percent of GDP in Honduras, 7.7 percent i…

  • Financial Markets and the State

Roman Frydman, Michael D Goldberg et al.•ARTICLE•Capitalism and Society•2009•Citada por: 1

The paper makes use of an Imperfect Knowledge Economics (IKE) approach to examine the rationale and scope of state intervention in asset markets. IKE recognizes that policy officials and market participants must cope with ever-imperfect knowledge of the causal mechanism driving market outcomes. In our IKE-based model of asset markets, price swings arise from participants' diverse interpretations of the effects of fundamentals on outcomes. Under I…

  • The Financial Crisis and the Systemic Failure of the Economics Profession

David Colander, Michael Goldberg et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Review•2009•Citada por: 42•Referências: 18

Economists not only failed to anticipate the financial crisis; they may have contributed to it—with risk and derivatives models that, through spurious precision and untested theoretical assumptions, encouraged policy makers and market participants to see more stability and risk sharing than was actually present. Moreover, once the crisis occurred, it was met with incomprehension by most economists because of models that, on the one hand, downplay…

  • Macroeconomic Theory for a World of Imperfect Knowledge

    Roman Frydman, Michael D Goldberg et al.•ARTICLE•Capitalism and Society•2008•Citada por: 3•Referências: 16

We have recently proposed an alternative approach to economic analysis, which we call Imperfect Knowledge Economics (IKE). Although IKE builds on the methodology of contemporary macroeconomics by modeling aggregate outcomes on the basis of mathematical representations of individual decision making, it jettisons models that generate sharp predictions. In this paper, we elaborate on and extend the arguments that led us to propose IKE. We show analy…

  • Tonal Cognition in Pattern Discrimination

Open Access•John M Holahan, T Clark Saunders et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•2000•Citada por: 1

The development of tonal pattern discrimination was investigated in 24 college musicians, 24 college nonmusicians, and 38 children in first grade. Comparisons of the two college-age groups on three tests yielded differences in accuracy and speed that interacted with item type. Comparisons of all three groups on one test demonstrated that college nonmusicians were no more accurate, although they responded to some item types faster than did the fir…

  • The Myth of the North American City

Michael A Goldberg, Michael Goldberg et al.•BOOK•Myth of the North American City•1986

The continuing tendency to "continentalize" Canadian issues has been particularly marked in the area of urban studies where United States-based research findings, methodologies, and attitudes have held sway. In this book, Goldberg and Mercer demonstrate that the label "North American City" as widely used is inappropriate and misleading in discussion of the distinctive Canadian urban environment. Examining such elements of the cultural context as …
