That earlier plague

An Introduction to English Historical Demography: From the Sixteenth Century to the Nineteenth Century . D. E. C. Eversley , Peter Laslett , E. A. Wrigley
Late-thirteenth-century Ireland as a region
The population distribution of late-thirteenth-century Irish cities is used to determine the status of culture (the term used anthropologically) of the island as a region. The evidence derives largely from areas of the cities and from numbers of city lots (burgages) in the descriptions (extents) of city taxation. Around A.D. 1275–85, Ireland had a population of about 650,000. Its largest city, Dublin, had about 10,000 inhabitants, thus nearly the…
The Population of Medieval Egypt
early summer and reaches its height in the lower valley in September and October. After the water begins to subside the seed is sown in the black, damp soil which changes to green as the crops grow and then to yellow as they ripen. As the Arab poet, Masoudi wrote, Egypt is a white pearl from July to September, a black cloth (of mad) from October to December, a green emerald from January through March, and a nugget of gold from April through June.…
The Preplague Population of England
Sometime in the period 1300-48, English population reached its high point in the Middle Ages. All agree that it rose rapidly in the thirteenth century and dropped catastrophically in 1348-77. Its course in the first half of the century, however, is the subject of two sharply divergent opinions. One is that population increased gradually to about 3,700,000 at the outbreak of the plague, a point at which “the agricultural people were being crowded.…
Effects of Pestilence and Plague, 1315-1385
The costs of poor health conditions are difficult to estimate for the Middle Ages. It is possible to establish in a tentative way a normal distribution by age and sex and to define what additional damage pestilence and plague did. One possible index is the number of able bodied persons (assuming persons of a definite age to be able bodied) compared to children, a dependency index. A second index is of the relative number of persons dying before t…

Phases of Grosseteste's Intellectual Life
Nearly all scholars who have studied the career of Robert Grosseteste are in agreement that he was a dominant figure in the intellectual life of thirteenth century England. Some of the ways in which this dominance was exercised are also clear: as bishop of Lincoln (1235–53) he was influential through his sermons, translations and other writings; as director of the Franciscan School at Oxford (ca. 1231–5) he set a standard of erudition which appea…
