An Archaeomagnetic Study of a Roman Bath in Southern France
Absolute Thellier–Thellier archaeointensity determinations were conducted on 137 tiles and sedimentary blocks from five different structures from the ‘Site de la Molère’, southern France, to constrain the archaeological interpretation of a relative age difference between structures and add new data to the French secular variation database. We present 89 new archaeointensity and 20 new directional results, with averages of 57 (±8) μT in the second…

Space, Geography, and Politics in the Early Roman Empire
Brilliant in conception and flowing in style, Space, Geography, and Politics in the Early Roman Empire documents Roman expansion in what came to be the beginnings of the early imperial period. In an inimitable way, the author of this groundbreaking work explores how Romans came to map the world they knew and conquered. Claude Nicolet studies both the agrimensores, who in the state's interest took care to observe and record territories for Britain…

Plautus: The Darker Comedies: Bacchides, Casina, and Truculentus
The plays translated in this volume represent everything one would not expect either from the third-century B.C. playwright Plautus or from Roman comedy in general. A common theme in all three comedies is the triumph of women over men. In Truculentus, prostitutes snare all of the men in the play; in Bacchides, the victims include fathers and sons. In Casina, Plautus creates a fantasy that turns traditional social and sexual roles upside down. The…

The City in the Ancient World
The emergence of cities in the different regions of the ancient world presents two problems. First, in areas of common culture or at least of cultural contact, did the cities evolve independently, as phenomena of social, political, and economic growth, or did they emanate from a common center of origin? Second, how did the Greco-Roman city-state originate? In considering these questions, Mason Hammond has limited the ancient world to the Middle a…

Economic Stagnation in the Early Roman Empire
That the later Roman empire was a period of stagnation, not to say X of decline and total collapse, in the economic as in other spheres has long been recognized. But it has been the contribution of such modern scholars as Frank, Rostovtzeff, and Heichelheim to show that the symptoms and causes of this stagnation are not to be sought solely in the anarchy of the third century A.D. They may be detected earlier, behind the facade of peace and prospe…

Detailed studies have been, and continue to be, made of the membership of the Senate during different reigns within these limits and it is the purpose of this paper to draw together into a general picture the results of the followi…
