  • Images of Reality: Iris Murdoch's Five Ways from Art to Religion

    Open Access•Edgar Burns, Elizabeth Burns•ARTICLE•Religions•2015•References: 15

Art plays a significant role in Iris Murdoch's moral philosophy, a major part of which may be interpreted as a proposal for the revision of religious belief. In this paper, I identify within Murdoch's philosophical writings five distinct but related ways in which great art can assist moral/religious belief and practice: art can reveal to us "the world as we were never able so clearly to see it before"; this revelatory capacity provides us with ev…

Annual changes in the amount and location of residential fringe development in metropolitan Phoenix are tracked from 1990 to 1998 using local records of housing completions. New development covered a wide geographic area in 1990 but became more geographically concentrated with time. Metropolitan Phoenix is organized into five belts: (1) an outer rural zone, (2) an area of pioneer settlement where the construction of single-family housing began in…

  • Job Linkages in Inner-City Phoenix

    Elizabeth Burns, Elizabeth K Burns et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Geography•1998•Cited by: 4•References: 2

Current urban policy stresses the creation of a sustainable economic base in the inner city. It is assumed that increasing the number and range of jobs in the inner city will result in employment opportunities for disadvantaged local residents. This paper explores the linkage between inner-city employment and inner-city residence in Phoenix, Arizona, using the 1995 Maricopa County Trip Reduction Survey. Results indicate that only 15% of the emplo…

  • Iris Murdoch and the Nature of Good

    Open Access•Edgar Burns, Elizabeth Burns•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•1997

Iris Murdoch's concept of Good is a central feature of her moral theory; in Murdoch's thought, attention to the Good is the primary means of improving our moral conduct. Unfortunately, her unsystematic presentation of her ideas and the difficulty of the issues being considered make it hard to be sure what she means by the Good, and how we are to attend to it. I will argue that this uncertainty has given rise to three objections which, with some c…

Open Access•Elizabeth Burns, Elizabeth K Burns et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Planning Education and…•1987•References: 3

This paper begins to formalize a conception of maturity and leadership in the planning academy. Building on a pair of seminal papers by Krueckeberg (1984, 1985) and recent literature on academic unit leadership, this paper presents a descriptive and analytic overview of the planning academy and compares and contrasts leadership in planning education units against a situational model of academic leadership. The paper concludes with an agenda of po…
