Rethinking policy and decision-making in the U.S. electricity industry: Lessons from decision processes and institutional constraints
Music and Instruments of the Middle Ages: Essays in Honour of Christopher Page
The Critical Nexus: Tone-System, Mode, and Notation in Early Medieval Music. By Charles M. Atkinson
If one were to describe this impressive book in a nutshell, one might simply say that it is a thorough and rigorous account of the medieval tone-system in its theoretical and practical aspects; but this would do scant justice to its depth and complexity. Parts of it could easily be used as textbook material for students with no prior knowledge of the subject; other parts, however, descend to a level of detail that presupposes a considerable amoun…

Convergence Television: Aggregating Form and Repurposing Content in the Culture of Conglomeration
Gunhild Agger & Jens F Jensen (red.): The Aesthetics of Television
Pretransitional population control and equilibrium
A persistent theme in much anthropological writing is the concept of the deliberate control of population numbers by hunter-gatherers as a means of achieving moderate family size, adequate nutrition, and constrained adult mortality. An analysis of the mix of theory and field evidence that led to this conclusion finds the case not proven. On the contrary, Malthusian constraints can operate, and probably did operate, to produce a hunter-gatherer so…

The Role of Traditional Fertility Regulation in Sri Lanka
Among the countries of South Asia, Sri Lanka, with a birth rate of 26 per 1,000, has achieved by far the lowest fertility level. The research reported here shows that at least half of all fertility control there is still practiced by means other than those offered by the national family planning program. This paper reports on an investigation carried out by the Sri Lankan Department of Census and Statistics, employing a micro-approach to demograp…

Huddling Preferences among Albino Rats
The effects of kinship and familiarity upon huddling preferences were examined in 30 albino rat pups. Examined were preferences among familiar siblings, nonfamiliar siblings, familiar nonsiblings, and nonfamiliar agemates. Analysis indicated initial preferences among both related and familiar subjects, but preferences were less obvious on the second day of testing. Familiarity may be a primary influence affecting interactions among rat pup siblin…
