    Open Access•Bethany Johnson, Margaret M Quinlan•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2026

Introduction: In “A Chorus of Pain in Four Parts,” we highlight the profound lack of pain management offered for many gynecological and reproductive health procedures. Materials and Methods: This poem allows readers to reimagine perinatal care by exploring the equity issues in failing to address perinatal pain. Whose pain is ignored; whose is overlooked? The italicized text represents direct quotes drawn from our research interviews, Reddit threa…

  • Smoothies, bone broth, and fitspo

    Bethany Johnson, Margaret M Quinlan et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Humanities•2024•References: 7

TikTok, a now iconoclastic social media platform, hosts millions of videos on health, wellness and physical fitness, including content on postpartum wellness and 'bouncing back'. At present, few studies analyse the content of postpartum videos urging viewers to bounce-back or the potential influence of these videos. Given the acknowledged relationship between social media use and adverse mental health outcomes (eg, lowered self-esteem, increased …

  • The Johnes of Glasgow

    Open Access•Bethany Johnson•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•2022•Cited by: 1

Recent scholarship highlights the importance of public health policy in the early modern era. Long before the arrival of the plague, municipal governments instituted a range of policies to protect the health of the commonweal. In the last quarter of the sixteenth century, town councils in both Glasgow and London approved searching during outbreaks. Searchers could view residents for signs of sickness, and tabulate infections and cause of death. P…

  • Crash Course History of Science

    Allison Marsh, Bethany Johnson•ARTICLE•Isis•2020

In 2017 Allison Marsh joined the team to create the Crash Course History of Science educational video series for YouTube. She then began incorporating these videos into the online version of a popular introductory survey course at the University of South Carolina, “HIST 108: Science and Technology in World History.” During the Summer and Fall terms of 2019, she collected data with the hope of comparing content retention between students who watch…

  • Personal, Interpersonal, Biomedical, Textual

    Bethany Johnson•ARTICLE•Departures in Critical…•2016

The following is an autoethnographic account of the experience of infertility, constructed as a dialogue representing personal, interpersonal, biomedical, and textual voices. The dialogue includes excerpts from other autoethnographic work on infertility, medical records, voicemail messages and interviews, medical texts and brochures, and memoir. The body of this dialogue is a series of vignettes reflecting the lived experience of an infertile pat…

  • School Trips

Marc Schlossberg, Jessica Greene et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Planning…•2006

For over 50 years the U.S. has been shifting away from small, neighborhood schools to larger schools in lower density areas. Rates of children walking and biking to school have declined significantly over this period. This study examines the relationship between urban form, distance, and middle school students walking and biking to and from four schools in Oregon. Five primary results emerge: (1) urban form helps predict travel mode to and from s…

  • How do they get there? A spatial analysis of a ‘sprawl school’ in Oregon

Marc Schlossberg, Page Paulsen Phillips et al.•ARTICLE•Planning Practice and Research•2005

  • The Southern Agrarians and the New Deal

Bethany Johnson, Bethany L Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Southern History•2003

Scholars frequently assume that the Southern Agrarian movement was limited to the philosophy laid out in the landmark 1930 book I'll Take My Stand. Yet that work consisted mainly of a philosophical critique of a nation that valued progress above spirituality. Were it not for the Agrarians' angry reaction to criticism of their book and for a dramatic transformation of the American political and economic landscape Agrarianism would have died in 193…
