The Bantu Expansion and the Soas Network
One difference between linguists and other Africanists seemed to be that others were prepared to jettison one part of their training to help other disciplines, but linguists apparently would not. Was this so, and if so, why? The Bantu expansion has been a problem for historians ever since the recognition by linguists of a single startling fact. During the nineteenth century, the descriptions of African languages available to scholars in Europe gr…
Trees and Traps: Strategies for the Classification of African Languages and their Historical Significance
For the present series there will emerge a complete genetic reclassification of the languages of Africa. These results are so at variance with the commonly accepted scheme that a brief methodological foreword seems in order. There is nothing recondite about the methods which I have employed.... These abruptly articulated sentences form the opening of the first in a series of articles which, with time, would be seen to have initiated a new phase i…
Malcolm Guthrie and the Reconstruction of Bantu Prehistory
As to the scientific method,... it consist in the careful and often laborious classification of facts, in the comparison of their relationships and sequences, and finally in the discovery... of a brief statement or formula , which in a few words resumes the whole range of facts. A Survey of recent results in the radiocarbon chronology of Northern and Western Africa
The number of radiocarbon dates relating to Africa has increased rapidly during the last twelve years, as a glance through the back numbers of this Journal will show; and the increase reflects quite accurately the growth in our knowledge of later African prehistory. Almost 200 dates are given in this article which have not been quoted before, but even so the list is incomplete. It seems clear that a more and more selective approach will have to b…

The Chronology of the Kings and Queenmothers of Bono-Manso: A Revaluation of the Evidence
The formation of Bono-Manso appears to date from the early fifteenth century, perhaps c. 1420. It is concluded that it was not until the late sixteenth century, during the reign of the ninth king, that the procedures still in use at Takyiman for recording reign-length were first introduced. Muslim influence is strongly to be suspected. Perhaps at the same time, perhaps later, factitious records of reign-length were supplied for earlier generation…
