Community-based Suicide Interventions in Rural United States
Rural communities in the United States (US) are disproportionately burdened with higher suicide rates than non-rural ones, facing structural and cultural barriers that make it less likely for suicidal individuals to obtain help. Community-based interventions have been called for to address the need for integrative approaches relevant to the rural landscape. To facilitate increased adaptation/implementation of rural suicide prevention programming,…
Extended reality in higher education
Online virtual worlds have increasingly become meeting places for students and teachers to discuss and collaborate on diverse academic subjects and practices. Furthermore, in response to the recent global COVID-19 pandemic, there has also been a heightened drive to provide online educational facilities that harness immersive virtual environments (IVEs) via social software. Contemporary extended reality (XR) platforms present higher education esta…

Characteristics of Clinical Trial Participants with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Clinical trial participation was identified among 17.9% (MD STAR net site: 3.7-27.3%) of 358 individuals with DMD. Corticosteroids, tadalafil, and ataluren (PTC124) were the most common trial medications recorded. Fewer non-Hispanic blacks or Hispanics than non-Hispanic whites participated in clinical trials. Trial participants tended to reside in counties with lower percentages of non-Hispanic blacks. Conclusion : Understanding characteristics a…
Samuel Beckett in Virtual Reality
This article describes an investigation of interactive narrative in virtual reality (VR) through Samuel Beckett's theatrical text Play. Actors are captured in a green screen environment using free-viewpoint video (FVV). Built in a game engine, the scene is complete with binaural spatial audio and six degrees of freedom of movement. The project explores how ludic qualities in the original text elicit the conversational and interactive specificitie…
Exploring volumetric video and narrative through Samuel Beckett’s Play
This paper draws upon the primary research of an interdepartmental collaborative practice-as-research project that took place at Trinity College during 2017, in which a Samuel Beckett play, entitled Play, was reinterpreted for virtual reality. It included contributions from the Departments of Computer Science, Drama and Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The goal of this article is to offer some expanded philosophical and aesthetic reflection…
Ghosn, Yamashiro and the United Nations - Japan's Coercive Police Practices in the International Spotlight
In an effort to combat abuse of police powers by the world's most repressive regimes, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a "Body of Principles for the Protection of All Persons under Any Form of Detention or Imprisonment" at a plenary meeting on December 9, 1988. Among other things, these rules declare that "A detained or imprisoned person shall have the right to be visited by and to correspond with, in particular, members of his family …
Critical pedagogies and the theatre laboratory
This dialogue contributes reflections on the ‘theatre laboratory’ to the scholarly debate surrounding methodologies of drama education and applied performance. The co-authors suggest that the experimental and ensemble-led approach of the Samuel Beckett Laboratory, founded at Trinity College Dublin in 2013 as a space for research into Beckett in performance, may offer one response to a question that Kathleen Gallagher proposes in the twentieth Ann…
Jack White and the Music of the Past, Present, and Future
Jack White is one of today’s most influential American rock musicians, having inspired the indie-rock duo craze and the blues-rock revival. This study explores his influence, concentrating on three facets of his career: White’s relationship with past musical genres, in particular his adoption of delta blues compositional and performance style; his calculated visual imagery and mythological persona; and his promotion of LPs in light of the resurge…

The politics of television and the television of politics
Some models of balance applied to children's perceptions of international relations
Data obtained from four national samples of 6–11 year old children are presented, showing preference for four countries, perceived friendship of these countries with the subject's own country and perceived relationships among the target‐countries. Two quantitative analogues of Heider's balance theory are used to examine the relations between these sets of data, one employing a multiplicative and the other a distance approach. Both models were fou…
On the development of national attitudes in children
The present study consists of three related experiments which are concerned with the development of national attitudes in children between the ages of seven and twelve. It was predicted on the basis of a structural interpretation of Allport's three‐stage developmental theory of prejudice that national attitudes will increase at first due to increasing consistency of judgment and decrease afterwards due to cognitive differentiation. The hypothesis…
