Juvenile Offending Among Maltreated Youth
This study assesses how different forms of abuse and neglect are associated with juvenile offending, with specific emphasis on whether youth commit offenses analogous to the illicit parental behaviors to which they were exposed. Using statewide child welfare system data linked with juvenile offending records, we assess rates and types of offending among a cohort of youth exposed to child maltreatment, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, and n…
Biased Bullying Victimization and Student Wellbeing
This study tested whether bias motivation is an aggravating element of bullying victimization, such that victims of bullying involving bias experience lower wellbeing than victims of nonbiased bullying and nonvictims. Using nationally representative data from the 2009/2010 United States Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey ( n = 11,335), I use coarsened exact matching (CEM) to compare wellbeing for youth in exposure and control g…
The Relationship Between Dimensionality and Duration of Household Poverty During Childhood and Onset of Youth Offending
Concern about rising youth offending amidst a cost-of-living crisis in the United Kingdom has reignited policy and academic debates about the relationship between childhood poverty and youth offending. International research findings are mixed, however, possibly due to the variety of poverty measures analysed or inconsistent examination of duration of poverty exposure. This study sheds new light on the issue by assessing the potential association…
Differentiated Threat and Religious Dominance
Drawing on theories of differentiated threat and religious dominance, this article examines the dynamics of xenophobia and Islamophobia in the United States. Specifically, we analyze the distinct threats that immigrants and Muslims pose to groups of various religious identifications. We find that (1) Muslims are perceived as carrying an ideational threat, but not a materialist threat, and (2) immigrants are perceived as carrying a materialist thr…
Do foster youth face harsher juvenile justice outcomes? Reinvestigating child welfare bias in juvenile justice processing
Research summary For decades, child welfare scholars and policy makers have been concerned with the strong association between foster care and juvenile justice involvement. Foster care placement may lead to differences in justice system outcomes if youth in foster care face “processing bias”—differentially harsh treatment by agents of the juvenile court. Previous research found that youth in foster care at the time of juvenile justice contact wer…
The Noncitizen Penalty in U.S. Federal Courts
Previous literature has found that noncitizens are punished in U.S. federal courts more severely than U.S. citizens for offenses that are legally equivalent, though less is known about variation in the noncitizen effect depending on the defendant’s nation of citizenship. Using United States Sentencing Commission (USSC) federal courts data from 2018 to 2020, we analyze group differences in the noncitizen penalty across regions of national origin. …
Youth Violent Offending in School and Out
This study used violent victimization data from the National Crime Victimization Survey (1994–2018) to examine whether criminal justice interventions (i.e. reporting to the police and arrest) for youth-perpetrated violence were more likely to occur in school than outside school. On average, violence at school was 8.4 percentage points less likely than violence outside school to be reported to the police, but if there was a police report, violence…
