A Unique Worked Stone Mortar From Tel Yin c am
A unique carved basalt mortar from Tel Yinc am in the eastern Lower Galilee is an important addition to a small assemblage of Iron Age three- and four-legged stone mortar-shaped vessels of a relatively tall, narrow type found only in the northern and central Jordan, the Jezreel and Yavneel valleys. A hoard of ivories comprising three hundred and eighty pieces was discovered in Megiddo by Gordon Loud in 1937 in three connected treasury rooms of the palace of a prince who lived in the latter part of the Late Bronze Age. Among the ivories was a plaque incised with a feast and military scene1 (Fig. 1), at the left is depicted a seated prince attended by a lady in Syrian dress and entertained by a lyre player.
