  • Exemplary Lives: The Uses of Psychobiography for Theory Development

    Open Access•Rae Carlson•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•1988

Why should psychologists undertake psychobiographical inquiry? This article argues that our primary responsibility in this multidisciplinary field is that of developing basic personality theory An “invisible collaboration” is proposed, such that excellent biographical studies in neighboring disciplines provide basic data for our theoretical efforts The proposal is illustrated by analyzing two highly acclaimed works in terms of Tomkins's (1979) sc…

    Rae Carlson, Julie Brincka•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•1987•Cited by: 4•References: 1

Two hypotheses derived from Tomkins' theory of ideological scripts were tested in a study of voters' perceptions of major candidates 1 month prior to the 1984 presidential election. College students and community adults cast candidates as leading characters in imaginary TV dramas representing humanistic vs normative triads of affects, and completed an abridged version of Tomkins' Polarity Scale. Specific predictions were that (1) Republican candi…

  • Masculine/feminine: A personological perspective

    Open Access•Rae Carlson•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•1985

How might our expanding knowledge of gender contribute to a deeper understanding of personality? This paper offers a personological perspective for considering the import of contemporary work, and focuses on the ten substantive papers included in this issue of the Journal of Personality An agenda for our future inquiry is proposed that includes (a) revising our ideology of science in a postpositivist era, (b) recognizing the complexity of persona…

  • Affect and psychological magnification: Derivations from Tomkins' script theory

    Open Access•Leslie Carlson, Rae Carlson•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•1984

This study tested derivations from Tomkins' script theory by asking college students (17 men, 16 women) to generate plots for television dramatic programs dealing with human emotions. Plots involving “social” affects of joy and shame elicited more interpersonal themes than did the “nonsocial” affects of excitement and fear. Further, as predicted, plots dealing with negative affects (fear and shame) were more highly elaborated than were positive a…

  • Understanding Women: Implications for Personality Theory and Research

    Open Access•Rae Carlson•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1972•Cited by: 18•References: 24

This paper addresses the neglect of work on feminine psychology as a symptom of the far broader impoverishment of contemporary work in personality. Bakan's concepts of agency and communion are invoked toward understanding the constraints imposed by current research paradigms. Agentic (masculine) modes of inquiry involving manipulation, quantification, and control need to be complemented by the communal (feminine) research styles (naturalistic, qu…

    Open Access•Rae Carlson, Nissim Levy•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

This study reports the development of a brief measure of the construct “social-personal orientation” (SPO), defined as a tendency to define one's self-concept primarily in terms of social experiences of in terms independent of social relationships. Choices of “social” or “personal” terms on a 30-item adjective checklist were stable and internally consistent in three samples of college students. Evidence on construct validity of the measure was ob…
