The purpose of this article was to examine the citizenship attitudes of Canadians, specifically as these attitudes may vary by ethnic origin. Citizenship attitudes were operationalized in terms of having a Canadian (as opposed to a provincial or ethnic) identity and having a positive attachment to Canada. In order to test the hypothesis that persons with gender-appropriate, as compared with gender-inappropriate, traits are evaluated more favorably, a person perception task was designed. Subjects ( n = 211) rated written descriptions of males and females who were said to possess either masculine or feminine personality characteristics, which, in turn, were either socially desirable or undesirable. The literature suggests that geographic mobility, both inside one's country and internationally, will be associated with general ethnic tolerance. To overcome problems in current ways of scoring androgyny, a new method is proposed for constructing a continuous androgyny score from the components of masculinity and femininity. Two studies are reported in which a scale measuring sex-role ideology was constructed, validated and cross-validated. Discrimination in Evaluative Judgments against Foreign-Accented Job Candidates
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the ethnicity of speakers, as suggested in accents, on judgments of suitability for a job, and to establish the relationship between listeners' attitudes and the evaluation of accented speech. 203 subjects acted as personnel consultants and evaluated 10 job applicants for four jobs varying in social status.
