  • A Study of Psychological Factors in Patients with Surgically Intractable Duodenal Ulcer and Those with Other Intractable Disorders

    J C THOROUGHMAN, G R Pascal et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1967

Previous studies of patients with intractable duodenal ulcer showed that those who had poor surgical results could be differentiated by psychological measures from those with good results. Estimates of environmental satisfaction and reported early relations with mother showed excellent predictive validity. It was hypothesized, however, that these measures were not specific to intractability in duodenal-ulcer patients. The present study indicates …

  • Early History Variables in Predicting Surgical Success for Intractable Duodenal Ulcer Patients

    G R Pascal, J C THOROUGHMAN et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1966

This study is concerned with the reported early experiences with parents of intractable duodenal ulcer patients, all male veterans. Rated life history variables are used to compare surgical successes and failures. The method for obtaining ratings on the variables was the use of a specially devised research-oriented interview found to yield satisfactory reliability. One variable, Displays of Affection from Mother, met the criterion of significance…

  • Relationship Between Bender-Gestalt Test Scores and the Response of Patients with Intractable Duodenal Ulcer to Surgery

    G R Pascal, J C THOROUGHMAN•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1964

Sixty-nine patients with duodenal ulcer have been administered the BenderGestalt test at or about the time of surgery for intractability, were evaluated 2 yr. postoperatively, then classified as showing “good” or “poor” surgical results. A marked relationship was found between the Bender-Gestalt test performance and the patients' responses to surgery. It is suggested that the Bender-Gestalt might well be included as a part of a battery of tests u…

  • Psychological Factors Predictive of Surgical Success in Patients with Intractable Duodenal Ulcer

    J C THOROUGHMAN, G R Pascal et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1964

A relatively simple interview technique was developed and validated which predicts the outcome of surgical intervention in patients with intractable duodenal ulcer. A scored interview guide provides a quantitative basis on which to base clinical opinion. Evidence for the validity of the interview guide is presented in two studies, one postdictive and the other truly predictive. When the recommended cut-off scores are used, the scale demonstrates …
