  • A note on the 1929 International Congress of Psychology

    Open Access•Carl P Duncan•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of the…•1980

The Ninth International Congress of Psychology, held at Yale University in 1929, was the first Congress held in America. An examination of the Proceedings of the Congress and letters from some of the participants suggest that perhaps more eminent psychologists attended this meeting than any other, before or since.

  • Recognition of names of eminent psychologists

    Open Access•Carl P Duncan•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of the…•1976

Faculty members, graduate students, undergraduate majors, and introductory psychology students checked those names they recognized in the list of 228 deceased psychologists, rated for eminence, provided by Annin, Boring, and Watson. Mean percentage recognition was less than 50% for the 128 American psychologists, and less than 25% for the 100 foreign psychologists, by the faculty subjects. The other three groups of subjects gave even lower recogn…

  • Anagram Solving as a Function of Letter Spacing

    Open Access•Edward J O'Connell, Edward J O’Connell et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1961

Frequencies of bigrams (two-letter combinations) in written language, e.g., Underwood and Schulz (1960), may be used to compute total bigram frequency of any set of letters by summing, left to right, frequencies of successive bigrams. Mayzner and Tresselt (1959) showed that, if the same word was rearranged into two anagrams, one with high, the other wich low, total bigram frequency, solution times were significantly slower for anagrams with high …

  • Letter Response Hierarchies within and among Subjects

    Open Access•Carl P Duncan•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1960

In the typical free association procedure with a list of words as stimuli, each S of a group of Ss gives a single word response to each stimulus. Since different Ss give different responses to the same stimulus word, and since the responses usually vary in frequency, i.e., in number of Ss giving each response, the different responses given to each stimulus represent what may be called a response hierarchy among Ss. In another procedure each S is …
