Demographic, Clinical and Social Determinants of Blood Pressure Control Among Black men who have had Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack
Engaging and Recruiting Black Men With Stroke or TIA in a Randomized Clinical Trial Conducted
This report describes implementation of a clinical trial testing a behavioral approach to reduce stroke risk factors in Black men with stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). A survey of research team members identified macro-, mediator-, and micro-level barriers and facilitators to research engagement and participation and identified approaches to address these barriers. Not being aware of the study was the key macro-level barrier. The team u…
The TargetEd MAnageMent Intervention for Reducing Stroke Risk in Black Men
This 6-month randomized controlled trial compared TEAM, a group intervention to reduce stroke risk versus a 6-month wait-list control in Black men with stroke or transient ischemic attack. The primary outcome was the change from baseline to 6 months in systolic blood pressure (SBP). There were 160 randomized, N = 78 to TEAM, N = 82 to Waitlist, mean age 61.2 ( SD 9.5). Attrition was 53.1% and similar across arms. Biomarker values were extracted f…
Thirty-day mortality rates among young adult stroke patients and their characteristics at Kiruddu and Mulago hospitals in Uganda
Stroke outcomes among young adults in Uganda are unclear. This study therefore determined the clinical characteristics and 30-day outcome among young adults with an acute stroke. In a prospective observational cohort study, 61 young adults with confirmed stroke were followed up for 30 days. Socio-demographic and clinical characteristics were collected using a study questionnaire. Kaplan–Meier curves, and modified Poisson regression were performed…
Recovery Symptoms and Mood States in Thai Cabg patients
Recovery symptoms and related mood states during early recovery after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) have never been assessed in Thailand. This cross-sectional descriptive correlational study was to identify the relationships between frequency of recovery symptoms and mood states of a convenience sample of 91 Thai CABG patients during 2 weeks after discharge. Standardized tools/procedures were used to measure the variables of interes…
Machiavellianism and Tolerance of Ambiguity
The relationship of Machiavellianism and Tolerance of Ambiguity was studied in 47 African-American college and university administrators. The mean score on Machiavellianism in the youngest group (30–40 yr.) of administrators was significantly higher on Machiavellianism than the mean of the oldest group (50 yr. and older) of administrators
Surgical Residents' Scores on Measures of Machiavellianism and Physicians' Uncertainty
51 self-reported scores on the Mach V Scale and 56 scores on Physician's Reactions to Uncertainty Constructs from surgical residents in three different specialties (30 general, 14 orthopedics, 9 urology, and 3 other) showed no significant difference between means on the two measures
Psychiatric Residents' Scores on Machiavellianism
For self-reports by 21 psychiatric residents on measures of Machiavellianism and Uncertainty no significant difference was noted by year in residency program, education, age, or gender
Machiavellian Scores of Nursing Faculty and Students
The purpose of the research was to identify differences in scores on Machiavellianism between nursing faculty and students. Measurement of Machiavellianism was on the Mach V Scale completed by 33 nursing faculty, 47 RN students completing the nursing baccalaureate, and 58 senior generic students in one baccalaureate nursing program. Each subject received a research packet coded for retrieval of the nonrespondents and reducing selection bias assoc…
Machiavellianism and Medical Career Choices
Medical career choices and Machiavellianism of 36 junior and 37 senior medical students at one private midwestern medical school were studied. Machiavellianism was measured by the Mach V Scale. Students choosing psychiatry did not score significantly higher on Machiavellianism than those choosing medicine, surgery, or other clinical medical specialties. This is contrary to previous research which indicated those medical students choosing psychiat…
