  • Pandemic Roller-Coaster? Birth Trends in Higher-Income Countries During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Tomáš Sobotka, Kryštof Zeman et al.•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•2024•Cited by: 21•References: 75

We use monthly birth data collected by the Human Fertility Database to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on birth trends until September 2022 in 38 higher-income countries. We also present estimates of the monthly total fertility rate adjusted for seasonality. Our analysis reveals that the pandemic led to distinct swings in births and fertility rates. The initial pandemic shock was associated with a fall in births in most countries, wit…

  • What should be the baseline when calculating excess mortality? New approaches suggest that we have underestimated the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and previous winter peaks

    Open Access•Vladimir M Shkolnikov, Ilya Klimkin et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2022

Excess mortality has been used to measure the impact of COVID-19 over time and across countries. But what baseline should be chosen? We propose two novel approaches: an alternative retrospective baseline derived from the lowest weekly death rates achieved in previous years and a within-year baseline based on the average of the 13 lowest weekly death rates within the same year. These baselines express normative levels of the lowest feasible target…

  • Is It a Cube? Common Visual Perception of Cuboid Drawings

    Open Access•Miklós Hoffmann, Laszlo Nemeth•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2021

A cube is one of the most fundamental shapes we can draw and can observe from a drawing. The two visualization methods most commonly applied in mathematics textbooks and education are the axonometric and the perspective representations. However, what we see in the drawing is really a cube or only a general cuboid (i.e., a polyhedron with different edge lengths). In this experimental study, 153 first-year ( 19–20-year-old) students, two-thirds of …

  • The Gompertz force of mortality in terms of the modal age at death

    Open Access•Trifon I Missov, Trifon Missov et al.•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2015•Cited by: 12•References: 22

The Gompertz force of mortality (hazard function) is usually expressed in terms of a, the initial level of mortality, and b, the rate at which mortality increases with age

  • Architecture for the Poor

    Laszlo Nemeth, Hassan Fathy•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1979

This volume describes Hassan Fathy's plan for building the village of New Gourna, near Luxor, Egypt, without the use of more modern and expensive materials such as steel and concrete. Using mud bricks, the native technique that Fathy learned in Nubia, and such traditional Egyptian architectural designs as enclosed courtyards and vaulted roofing, Fathy worked with the villagers to tailor his designs to their needs. He taught them how to work with …
