Existential import and Peirce’s early realism about universals
Peirce’s True Gorgias is a brief dialogue from his essay “Grounds of Validity of the Laws of Logic”, published in 1869. The True Gorgias exposes the fallacy of existential import. It has received no sustained attention in the secondary literature, perhaps because the fallacy is now familiar. Peirce’s assessment of the fallacy involved in the reasoning, however, changes between 1865 and 1869, and he only arrives at the contemporary account of exis…
Physical Activity during the School Holidays
Children's physical activity decreases during school holidays. Less structured days and reduced participation in organised activities may account for some of the decrease. Little is known about the factors that influence parents' decision to enrol their child in organised activity such as holiday clubs. This paper sought to explore parents' perceptions of their child's physical activity during school holidays and the factors that influence holida…
Striking a Balance
Physical activity levels decline, and screen-viewing behaviours increase during childhood and adolescence. The transition to secondary school appears to coincide with a sharp decline in physical activity. Parents have the potential to influence their child's behaviours, yet little is known about their expectations for their child's physical activity and screen-viewing during this transition. This paper explores parents' expectations for their chi…

Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man
Thomas Reid (1710–1796) was a philosopher who founded the Scottish school of 'common sense'. Much of Reid's work is a critique of his contemporary, David Hume (1711–1776), whose empiricism he rejects. In this work, written after Reid's appointment to a professorship at the university of Glasgow, and published in 1785, he turns his attention to ideas about perception, memory, conception, abstraction, judgement, reasoning and taste. He examines the…

Thomas Reid on Practical Ethics
The pervasiveness of Protestant natural law in the early modern period and its significance in the Scottish Enlightenment have long been recognised. This book reveals that Thomas Reid (1710-1796) - the great contemporary of David Hume and Adam Smith - also worked in this tradition. When Reid succeeded Adam Smith as professor of moral philosophy in Glasgow in 1764, he taught a course covering pneumatology, practical ethics, and politics. This sect…

The regiment gradually evolved into a tough, well-trained unit during action at Lake Providence, Fort De Russy, Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, and Jenkins' Ferry, as part of…

Thomas Reid - Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man
This is Thomas Reid's greatest work. It covers far more philosophical ground than the earlier, more popular Inquiry . The Intellectual Powers and its companion volume, Essays on the Active Powers of Man , constitute the fullest, most original presentation of the philosophy of Common Sense. In the process, Reid provides acutely critical discussions of an impressive array of thinkers but especially of David Hume. In Reid's eyes, Hume had driven a d…

Notes on the Life of William Lithgow, Traveller, 1582-1645
The notes on the life of William Lithgow, popularly known as " Lugless Willie," are chiefly derived from fresh material available through the publication of the Records and Charters of the Burgh of Lanark, 1150-1722; from an examination of the will of Lithgow's mother, dated 1603; and from notices regarding the family of Lithgows at Boathaugh, Lanark, contained in the MS. minutes of the Kirk-Session of Lanark.
