Olympiodoros
Olympiodoros was a pagan Neoplatonist philosopher who taught at Alexandria in the sixth century ce . The philosophy expressed in his surviving commentaries on Plato and Aristotle is essentially the same as that of Proklos but he adopts a more conciliatory attitude toward Christianity. Like other Neoplatonists, he shows knowledge of the entire preceding Greek literary and cultural tradition.
Imagination
The English word “imagination” is the standard translation of the Greek phantasia. This chapter examines two contrasting ways in which the term phantasia is used in ancient aesthetics. Phantasia in the sense of “visualization” is common in a variety of texts discussing poetry, oratory, historiography, and painting from the first century AD onward, including Longinus, On Sublimity, although the origins of the concept go back to Homer. Proclus' Attitude to Theurgy
Theurgy, the religious magic practised by the later Neoplatonists, has been commonly regarded as the point at which Neoplatonism degenerates into magic, superstition and irrationalism. 1 A superficial glance at the ancient lives of the Neoplatonists, and in particular at Eunapius’ Lives of the Sophists , reveals a group of people interested in animating statues, favoured with visions of gods and demons, and skilled in rain-making. But when we loo…

Studies on the 5th and 6th Essays of Proclus' Commentary on the Republic
Introduction: After a brief statement that Proclus' 5th and 6th essays deal with Plato's discussions of poetry in the Republic , some remarks are made about the continuing interest and relevance of Platonic and Neoplatonic attitudes to art, the background to Proclus' work and the problems of studying Neoplatonic commentaries. The contents of the thesis are summarised and related to these remarks and some important recent bibliography is mentioned…
